Job summary

Dawson Road Maintenance is seeking a Manager of Operations to lead the Smithers service area in BC. You will report to the VP of Operations and drive strategic direction, safety, and financial performance across the service area.

You will be the senior leader for the site, accountable for planning, budgeting, workforce development, and stakeholder relations with MOTT, CVSE, municipalities and the community. Some travel within BC is expected.

Qualifications

  • Ten years in progressive operations roles with budget responsibility.
  • Senior leadership experience with multi-team performance.
  • Experience with road maintenance/contracting is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Set and execute the multi-year strategy for the service area, translating corporate objectives into annual operating plans, budgets and performance targets.
  • Own the financial performance of the service area, including budget development, forecasting, capital planning and delivery against margin targets.
  • Lead and develop the service area leadership team, including the Superintendents and Supervisors while building succession depth in key roles.
  • Act as the company's senior representative to Ministry of Transportation and Transit (MOTT), CVSE, municipalities, First Nations, emergency services and the public within the service area.
  • Own safety performance for the service area as the visible senior leader of the Company's Safety Program.
  • Manage operation crew members to comply with MOTT Maintenance Specifications and the Contract Agreement, CVSE requirements, QMS Manual and procedures and general specifications for highway construction
  • Provide guidance on project concerns such as bad weather, scheduling conflicts, quality control issues, labour issues, as well as contractor and/or client concerns
  • Manage the efficient use of resources, materials and labour necessary to complete various projects in a timely manner
  • Approve and monitor project schedules and budgets, ensuring all resources necessary for project completion are secured and deployed effectively
  • Promote and advocate quality achievements and performance improvements across the company
  • Collaboratively negotiate contracts with suppliers, sub-contractors, agencies or other third-party provider of resources, equipment or labour
  • Provide crew direction on all emergencies, washouts, slides, structure damage, avalanches, and other severe weather events
  • Partner with Director of Health & Safety to ensure all Worksafe BC regulations and requirements are consistently followed and ensure proper procedures are carried out according to the Company’s Safety Program
  • Management representative in collective agreement bargaining, grievances, mediation and arbitration to proactively resolving employee issues
  • Ensure all employee concerns, including grievance process, are addressed in a timely manner
  • Determine staffing requirements and participate in interviews, hiring, and onboarding new employees
  • Build a coaching culture across the service area, developing supervisors and crew members at every level

Dawson Road Maintenance is looking for a Manager of Operations to lead our Smithers service area — the senior leader accountable for the strategic direction, operational performance, safety and financial results of the entire service area.

In this role you will be a valued member of Dawson Road Maintenance senior leadership team, working as the Manager, Operations and reporting to the VP, Operations. You are the ultimate authority in your service area, accountable for planning and executing the business both tactically and strategically — safety performance, service delivery under the Contract Agreement, budget and financial results, workforce and labour relations, and the company's relationships with MOTT, municipalities and the communities we serve. Your base location will be Smithers, BC and may require some travel throughout our great province.

What Success Looks Like

What You Bring
  • Minimum ten (10) years’ progressive operations experience, including five (5) years in a senior leadership role with accountability for budget and multi-team performance
  • Senior leadership skills, with a strong focus on operations, business processes and building high-performing teams
  • Track record of setting strategy and translating it into operating plans that deliver measurable results
  • Demonstrated profit and loss or budget ownership at a business unit or service area level
  • Experience in road and bridge maintenance within the construction industry is an asset
  • Post-secondary in a related field preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and related industry experience
  • Experience with ISO Compliance and/or other continuous improvement principles
  • Knowledge of Ministry of Transportation legislation, standards and processes for road maintenance
  • Understanding of road maintenance, equipment and construction industry
  • Strong written and verbal communication
