  • Canadian Rail Operating Rules qualified.
  • Knowledge of Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

The Manager, Tamper Training will act as a key liaison in the execution of comprehensive training programs for tamper machine operators within CPKC’s Western Canadian territory. In this role, you will be responsible for training, mentoring, and evaluating Engineering employees to ensure proficiency and competence in tamper operations. You will also oversee the tracking of training records, identify and recommend additional training needs, and manage the qualification and disqualification process for Engineering personnel. This position plays a critical role in fostering operational excellence, enhancing employee skills, and maintaining safety standards across the organization.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  1. Mentorship Leadership: Oversee and guide mentors assigned to facilitate the qualification process of tamper operators, ensuring high standards of performance and competency.
  2. On-the-Job Training: Plan, organize, and conduct comprehensive field training for tamper operators, including instruction on field guides, operator manuals, preventive maintenance guidelines, and lockout/tagout procedures for safety compliance.
  3. Training Coordination: Collaborate with the Technical Training department to arrange supplementary training opportunities to enhance operator skills and proficiency.
  4. Training Program Development: Identify needs and contribute to the design, development, and implementation of innovative training initiatives to ensure continuous improvement in operator performance.
  5. Training Records Management: Maintain and oversee training and qualification documentation through the Learning Management System (LMS) to ensure all tamper operators meet qualification standards prior to position assignments.
  6. Incident Investigation: Investigate incidents involving machine or equipment failures, assess cause, and recommend corrective actions, which may include operator disqualification if necessary.
  7. Bulletin Awards Oversight: Manage the bulletin awards process for Production, including the assignment and awarding of machine operator positions, ensuring fairness and qualifications align with organizational standards.
  8. Safety Enforcement: Ensure adherence to safe operating practices as outlined by machine manufacturers and CPKC regulations, fostering a culture of safety and compliance.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or general equivalency
  • Ten years’ experience in Production Crews with proven track record in Group 1 or Special Group Machine Operator
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Proficient knowledge & understanding of engineering field operations and production crews, tamping equipment operation and safety procedures
  • Canadian Rail Operating Rules qualified
  • Knowledge / understanding of Collect Bargaining Agreement (CBA) related to qualification / disqualification of position

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:

This is a safety sensitive position and a successful pre-employment medical assessment including physical, vision, hearing, and a negative company drug test is required. Post hire qualification drug testing may also be required.

Management Conductor Program:

Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
