Main Purpose and Function

Reporting directly to the Park Board’s Associate Director, Communications, Engagement & Marketing and working closely with senior leaders within the Park Board’s Business Services and Recreation teams, the Manager, Marketing and Revenue Generation provides leadership and direction to a team of marketing staff to develop, implement and report on strategic marketing plans, strategies, and campaigns to create greater awareness of Park Board services, business lines, and brand.

The Park Board portfolio covers a diverse range of consumer-facing lines of business including Recreation (e.g. fitness centres, aquatic services, permitted fields) and Business Services (destination attractions including VanDusen Botanical Garden, Bloedel Conservatory, Stanley Park Train; golf, concessions, marinas, film & special events, and fundraising). The Manager of Marketing and Revenue Generation leads the development and execution of proactive marketing programs. This role will be a driver to reach the Board objectives related to the Think Big Revenue Strategy and increase customer visitation and revenue.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Leads the development, implementation, and management of integrated, multi-channel consumer marketing programs to promote Park Board services, increase revenue, and enhance the Park Board’s share of the destination attraction, events, and recreation markets. This involves developing and implementing annual marketing plans and increasing visitation and revenue.
  • Leads the development and management of the Park Board brand with consideration of all other product and service lines to ensure consistency across all communication channels.
  • Works collaboratively with business units to understand the complex and varied initiatives, priorities, and issues to provide marketing guidance. Works closely with Park Board Communications to leverage overlapping marketing/communications needs.
  • Identifies emerging issues and opportunities within revenue-generating service areas and recommends appropriate marketing and communication approaches.
  • Manages budgets and processes to execute marketing initiatives in a cost-effective, timely fashion to achieve strategic objectives. Manages external contractors, as required, including managing the procurement/RFP process.
  • Works collaboratively with senior Park Board leaders to drive shared goals. Provides managerial backup to the Director, Business Services and/or Associate Director, Park Board Communications, as required.
  • Conducts marketing analysis and reporting by sharing results across the cross-functional teams and uses results to inform and adjust strategy for future initiatives.
  • Maintains current industry practices and market trends, evaluates and communicates consumer trends relating to Park Board business lines and identifies opportunities and risks.
  • Develops, builds, and maintains working relationships and understanding within their team, internal clients, and stakeholders. Creates an environment of trust and credibility through clear, accurate, open, and timely two-way communication with staff and stakeholders.
  • Reviews current marketing efforts across all business units to identify opportunities in streamlining processes for greater alignment and cohesion to maximize results.
  • Leads and mentors staff by providing clear direction, and provides ongoing feedback including coaching, training and development, hiring and termination, discipline, performance and attendance management.
  • Prioritizes working through an evidence-based approach for marketing planning and ensures plans perform against set objectives.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in marketing and communication or business, or clear demonstration of related experience.
  • Five (5) years’ experience leading a team with a focus on marketing and revenue generation in a role that includes managing multiple concurrent marketing initiatives preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • You demonstrate the City of Vancouver leadership dimensions through leading self, engaging others, and advancing the organization.
  • Work in diverse and complex private, public sector or agency experience, ideally within a unionized environment.
  • A specific track record implementing marketing strategies and making evidence-based decisions to support your organization’s goals.
  • A track record of maintaining organized, accurate, and detailed plans, reports, and budgets, meeting financial and reporting deadlines, and history with municipal corporate financial policy, processing contracts, and financial systems.
  • Demonstrated budget experience, including creating and managing a budget in a lean environment.
  • Knowledge of local government operations and processes, intergovernmental relations, and roles and responsibilities of orders of government is an asset.
  • Reputation as an avid learner and self-starter who follows emerging consumer and market trends for the joy of it, including channels and tools, using data and nimbly keeping pace with change.
  • Experience leading, managing, and influencing diverse and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to lead with a high level of business and political acumen, judgment, and diplomacy, including the handling of confidential and sensitive subject matter and reputational issues. Recommend appropriate responses, maintain professionalism, and lead the team with confidence in moments of crisis.

Where operationally appropriate and subject to change, the City of Vancouver has a Flexible Work Program. This program allows staff to work a hybrid work week from locations that are a daily commutable distance from their work at a City worksite. At this time this position is eligible to be part of the Flexible Work Program.
