Qualifications

Responsibilities

The Corporation of the City of Thunder Bay

has a rewarding opportunity for a Manager, Indigenous Relations ! (Full-time)

Work Location : Thunder Bay

As the Manager, Indigenous Relation, reporting to the Director – Strategy & Engagement, you will act as special advisor to the City Manager and provide leadership, expertise, and guidance to the Corporation in developing, enhancing and implementing effective municipal policies, programs, services and / or initiatives to strengthen the City’s relationship with Indigenous communities and organizations advancing truth and reconciliation efforts. A primary focus of this position will be to lead the implementation of the Indigenous Relations Strategy for the Corporation of the City of Thunder Bay, as well as champion a corporate team in achieving the City of Thunder Bay’s Anti-Racism and Inclusion Accord commitments.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have the following :

  • Degree in a political, social science or humanities field, or similar related field, and five years of progressively responsible management experience working with Indigenous peoples, diverse cultures, and racialized groups; or
  • Diploma in a political, social science or humanities field, or similar related field, and seven years of progressively responsible management experience working with Indigenous peoples, diverse cultures, and racialized groups
  • Minimum of three years’ supervisory experience
  • Knowledge of and understanding of Indigenous lived experience and a commitment to support truth and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples is preferred
  • Experience that may include knowledge gained from training with Indigenous knowledge keepers and Elders
  • In-depth knowledge of the history and present-day context of Indigenous governments, organizations and peoples in Thunder Bay and region
  • Experience building partnerships and working with Indigenous governments, organizations and peoples to improve access to services and employment in a complex political environment
  • Knowledge of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP); Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action; and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Calls for Justice
  • Experience in implementing strategies to increase Indigenous inclusion (i.e. social equity, economic development, community engagement, education, intervention, programs)
  • Knowledge of Canadian and international human rights legislation
