The Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation (OVPRI) establishes the strategic direction and oversees the administration of Toronto Metropolitan University’s scholarly, research and creative activity (SRC) enterprise, including grants administration, external funding, SRC policies, partnerships and collaborations, commercialization, and business development.

The Opportunity

The Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation is hiring for a Manager, Health Sciences Research Ethics Board. This role will manage and oversee the operations of the Health Sciences Research Ethics Board (REB) in the administration of the ethical review process for the OVPRI. The Manager acts as a liaison between the REB and researchers within the broader University community. This role will monitor on-going assigned REB activities to ensure compliance with all national, international, University and sponsors’ policies and guidelines, and will administer and maintain the Online Ethics Submission and Application Review System.

Qualifications

To help us learn more about you, please provide a cover letter and resume describing how you meet the following required qualifications:

  • Completion of a Master’s degree in a discipline related to health sciences-oriented research.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in a combination of research ethics administration and/or research ethics board membership.
  • Equivalent experience or a combination of equivalent experience and education may be accepted in place of education.
  • Experience managing multiple competing projects and delivering training to faculty, staff, students, and researchers.
  • Experience using an online and web-based system.
  • Previous experience managing staff in a unionized environment.
  • Extensive knowledge of the regulations and guidelines governing clinical research and research ethics (i.e., the protection of human research participants), including the Tri-Council Policy Statement, Health Canada regulations, International Conference on Harmonisation (ICH) Good Clinical Practice guidelines, USA regulations (Food and Drug Association and the Office for Human Research Protections), PHIPA (Personal Health Information Protection Act) and privacy legislations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in research ethics, particularly the TCPS2 (2022).
  • Knowledge of conducting research studies in varied settings.
  • Sound familiarity with a university culture and context, including familiarity with the range of university disciplines and academic discourse; nature of university scholarly, research and creative activities.
  • Exceptional communication (oral, interpersonal, written) and presentation skills.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills including ability to accurately interpret and apply agency and institutional regulations, policies and guidelines.
  • Ability to work with confidential information.
  • Conflict resolutions and persuasion skills.
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (e.g. MS Office, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and Google applications (e.g. Google Docs, Sheets).
