Position Summary

The Health and Safety Manager is responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of the NCC’s national health and safety program for employees in a wide variety of roles, from office to field based, across Canada.

Responsibilities :

  • Develops, recommends, presents to Senior Leadership, and implements annual H&S priorities to both ensure NCC is fully compliant with all legislation relating to occupational health and safety across Canada and to evolve and continuously improve the organization’s program;
  • Focuses on an accident prevention culture by ensuring comprehensive health, safety and environmental policies are developed in tandem with Safe Work Best Practices related to specific workplace hazards, and that staff are trained appropriately on both
  • Regularly meets with regional and central teams at various levels, including onsite across Canada and acts as a resource and subject matter expert to management and employees in health and safety related matters. Provides advice and guidance to management and employees (both permanent and seasonal) on the application of all health and safety policies and legislation.Creates action plans for gaps identified
  • Develops tracking and reporting for the leadership team on H&S metrics and analyzes all health and safety data, identifies gaps, and trends, and makes recommendations to improve NCC’s health and safety program through education, training and other.
  • Oversees the investigation of all health and safety matters including : work refusals, workplace injuries and illnesses and critical injuries, workplace inspections and environmental safety; Works with managers / supervisors and employees to arrange timely and safe return to work for injured employees
  • Provides leadership, guidance and support in the timely completion of workplace health and safety investigations, analyses and determine the root causes and trends and oversees all recommendations to for preventative measures to optimize workplace health and safety
  • Manages WCB claims across Canada, from initial injury until return to pre-injury work. Corresponds with physician, adjudicators, leaders, HR Managers, and injured employees as needed, for updates and claims management on any follow-up
  • Works with regional and national health and safety representatives and committees to ensure that Joint Health and Safety meetings, workplace inspections and workplace violence risk assessments are conducted and assessed, on a regular basis
  • Develops emergency response plans as needed
  • Conducts and facilitates internal heath and safety education, and coordinates and oversees any vendor-provided training as required

Position Requirements

  • Bilingual in English / French required (written and verbal)
  • Post-secondary degree in occupational health and safety or related discipline; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and education
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in occupational health and safety with at least 2 years’ experience as an Occupational Health and Safety Program Manager
  • Professional health and safety designation (CRSP or HSP) preferred
  • Valid occupational health and safety certification
  • Willingness to immediately gain a solid understanding of any hazards related to NCC’s roles through conversations with key staff including health and safety representatives and committee members, as well as site visits
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written) and demonstrated experience developing compelling presentations and recommendations on H&S matters to senior leadership teams.
  • Ability to effectively navigate high pressure / sensitive situations
  • Strong Microsoft office skills
  • Experience in similar work environments (conservation and / or forestry) is an asset
  • Analytical, mathematical and statistical skills to interpret data, identify trends and develop recommendations
  • Demonstrated project management, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills
  • Strong interpersonal, presentation, written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to travel across Canada
