Job Description

As part of the Canadian Compliance function, Group Compliance provides 2nd line of defense (2LOD) oversight of the Group Benefits, Group Retirement Services and Health Solutions business units. Our team is responsible for supporting Sun Life’s Group Benefits business which involves monitoring regulations impacting the business, promoting compliance awareness, overseeing business practices, and supporting enhancements to compliance processes.

Reporting to the Director, Group Compliance, you will collaborate closely with Group Benefits, Operational Risk and other oversight function teams such as Legal, Internal Audit and our peers in Canadian and Corporate Compliance. Leveraging an existing regulatory compliance management (RCM) program, you will be responsible for providing oversight and guidance to Group Benefits (1st line of defence or 1LOD), enabling the business to make informed decisions while meeting regulatory expectations.

We are searching for a candidate with related financial services experience and a solid understanding of how regulatory requirements impact large and complex organizations like Sun Life.

What will you do?
  • Monitor and communicate regulatory developments, requirements, risks and trends to internal stakeholders
  • Provide clear, plain language interpretations of new and existing regulatory requirements
  • Oversee the identification and reporting of compliance risks within Group Benefits and monitor remediation of risks using the Archer RCM program
  • Support compliance testing and perform monitoring activities to ensure business controls are adequate and effective to comply with applicable regulations
  • Assess and challenge the effectiveness of 1LOD’s controls and activities
  • Maintain and update regulatory compliance databases, inventories, and policies
  • Assist in designing and making available compliance-related training for staff
  • Participate in a variety of industry groups and interact with regulators to stay informed about regulatory changes and compliance concerns
  • Support projects and initiatives to improve compliance processes and practices
  • Proactively problem solve and identify ways to improve your own work processes and practices, and those of others
What you need to succeed?
  • At least 5 years of progressive experience in a compliance, risk management or related role, with a demonstrated understanding of regulatory compliance, preferably as it impacts group insurance
  • Working knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations, such as provincial and federal Insurance and Privacy laws, and Anti-Money Laundering legislation
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify compliance risks and assess their impact and severity
  • Ability to distill complex requirements without oversimplifying or missing critical components
  • Ability to understand the overall theme of a regulatory requirement despite the abundance of detailed provisions
  • Strong communication skills to clearly explain regulatory requirements and foster collaboration across teams
  • High ethical standards, sound judgment, and the ability to prioritize and work effectively in a fast-paced and ambiguous environment
  • Bilingualism (French, English, both oral and written) is required for Quebec for the frequent interactions with English and French-speaking colleagues or internal partners across Canada or worldwide

  • Familiarity with the three lines of defence (3LOD) model of OSFI-regulated financial institutions such as Sun Life
  • Experience with the Archer regulatory management system
  • Experience building relationships and working effectively with diverse teams
