This is a remote/work-from-home position, and the successful candidate must reside in Ontario or Nova Scotia. On-site attendance may be required periodically.

Job Summary:

The Manager, Finance is responsible for managing the finance and accounting functions at multiple levels of the organization, including managing a team of Finance staff. Responsibilities include general accounting, budgeting, reporting, and managing daily operations of the Finance department. At VON, we nurture leadership skills, lifelong learning, and collaborative working relationships amongst our teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Performs full-cycle accounting using SAP.
  • Prepares monthly financial statements for assigned areas, ensuring accuracy and timely submission.
  • Provides financial analyses to support management decision-making.
  • Attends finance meetings to review financial results and variances.
  • Reconciles balance sheet accounts with proper audit evidence.
  • Leads and supports annual budget preparation.
  • Prepares external funder reports, ensuring accuracy and deadlines (e.g., LHIN, MOH-LTC, United Way, MCSS).
  • Prepares audit documentation and responds to auditors' inquiries.
  • Oversees hiring and orientation of new staff.
  • Ensures staff receive Personal Development Plans and supports their professional growth.
  • Implements process improvements and system changes.
  • Supports initiatives that enhance internal controls, efficiency, and asset safeguarding.

Education, Designations, and Experience:

  • Post-secondary degree in business, finance, or accounting.
  • CPA designation (CMA, CGA, or CA) or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of accounting/finance experience, including at least 2 years managing people.
  • Knowledge of Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profits.
  • Controllership skills in budgeting, forecasting, and performance analysis.
  • Fundraising report experience is preferred.

Skill Requirements:

  • Proficiency with SAP, BOARD, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Proven leadership and managerial skills.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to perform deep dives into data.
  • Creative thinking, independence, and adaptability in changing environments.
  • Strategic thinking and effective communication, especially with senior stakeholders.
  • Self-motivated with excellent priority management.

Other:

  • Satisfactory Criminal Records Check required.
  • Vulnerable Sector Search and Child Abuse Registry Check may be required.
  • French language skills are an asset in designated areas.
  • Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) may be required.
