Job summary

CoolIT Systems Inc. in Calgary, Alberta seeks an Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Manager to lead regulatory compliance, sustainability initiatives, and safety programs.

This role reports to Operations leadership and works across functions to foster a culture of safety and accountability. The position focuses on implementing EHS systems, conducting audits, and driving ESG metrics in a manufacturing setting.

Qualifications

What You’ll Do

The Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Manager is responsible for the development, implementation, and oversight of all environmental, health, safety, and sustainability initiatives within the organization. This role ensures compliance with Canadian federal, provincial, and local regulations while aligning with standards such as ISO 14001 and COR (Certificate of Recognition). The EHS Manager also leads the company’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategy, integrating sustainability into daily operations and long‑term planning. Reporting to the Director of Operations (or Plant Manager), this role is both strategic and hands‑on, working cross‑functionally to drive a culture of safety, accountability, and environmental stewardship.

What You’ll Do

This role ensures compliance with Canadian federal, provincial, and local regulations while aligning with standards such as ISO 14001 and COR (Certificate of Recognition). The EHS Manager also leads the company’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategy, integrating sustainability into daily operations and long‑term planning. Reporting to the Director of Operations (or Plant Manager), this role is both strategic and hands‑on, working cross‑functionally to drive a culture of safety, accountability, and environmental stewardship.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain an integrated EHS management system aligned with ISO 14001, COR, and provincial OH&S legislation (e.g., OHSA, WSIB in Ontario, WCB in Western provinces)
  • Lead internal and external audits, inspections, and certification efforts related to ISO 14001, COR, and other applicable EHS standards.
  • Ensure company compliance with federal and provincial environmental and occupational health & safety regulations (e.g., Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Environment, WSIB/WCB).
  • Manage the full cycle of incident reporting and investigation using root cause analysis and corrective/preventive actions (CAPA).
  • Lead risk assessments, job hazard analyses (JHA), and ergonomic evaluations to prevent workplace injuries and illnesses.
  • Champion ESG initiatives, including tracking and reporting of key sustainability metrics: energy, emissions, waste, water usage, and social/community impacts.
  • Collaborate with Facilities and Maintenance on environmental projects such as emissions reductions, utility efficiency, and hazardous materials handling.
  • Deliver training programs and safety orientations to ensure regulatory compliance and employee awareness.
  • Manage emergency response and preparedness planning, including fire drills, spill response, and evacuation procedures.
  • Engage employees and management in continuous improvement initiatives for both safety and sustainability.
  • Develop and track KPIs for safety performance (e.g., TRIR, LTIR, near misses) and environmental impact, and report results to leadership.
  • Serve as the primary contact for government inspectors, insurance representatives, and third‑party auditors.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and records related to compliance, audits, inspections, permits, and incident logs.
  • Lead or support the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) initiatives as part of broader ESG goals.
Qualifications
WHO YOU ARE:
  • Comprehensive understanding of Canadian OH&S legislation, environmental regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Strong working knowledge of ISO 14001, COR, and related management system standards and audit processes.
  • Proven ability to lead cross‑functional EHS programs and foster a proactive, engaged safety culture.
  • Experience in ESG strategy development and implementation, including sustainability reporting frameworks (e.g., GRI, SASB).
  • Skilled in risk assessments, job hazard analysis, incident investigation, and corrective action planning.
  • Knowledge of industrial environmental systems (air, water, energy, waste, GHG emissions, hazardous materials).
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to influence at all levels.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills; experience with EHS software tools and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Comfortable working in a hands‑on manufacturing environment and engaging with employees at all levels.
