Organization Description

ALUS is a national charitable organization that engages farmers and ranchers in creating nature-based solutions on their land to build climate resilience and enhance biodiversity for the benefit of communities and future generations. Governments, businesses and philanthropic foundations can invest strategically in nature & climate solutions to generate positive environmental, economic and social outcomes in the communities where they operate.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Senior Director of Communications, you will be responsible for proactively supporting ALUS communities across the country with their communications needs and initiatives. You will cultivate relationships with ALUS communities and work with Hub Managers and Coordinators to support the creation of strategic communications plans, engaging communications tactics and events. You will also be responsible for growing ALUS’ social media audience and engagement.

You will occasionally work with different project teams within ALUS as needed. ALUS is an agile organization that relies on everyone’s ability to respond to multiple priorities on an ongoing basis and wants to provide internal professional development opportunities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Community Engagement and Communications: Manage internal communication channels and collaborate with the Program Delivery team to build a sense of belonging for the local coordinators and Partnership Advisory Committee members, through our newsletter, website, intranet and other communication channels.
  • Branding & Messaging: Steward the ALUS brand by ensuring the organization’s image and messaging are clearly and consistently represented by ALUS communities and provide communities with communications guidelines and support their needs by developing communication templates and marketing material.
  • Social Media and Digital Communications: Lead and execute the social media strategy and editorial calendar, creating and publishing impactful content and successful bilingual social media campaigns and newsletters that meet the organisation’s objectives and funder deliverables.
  • Content Creation: Oversee the creation of on-the-ground video, photo or text content, such as participant profiles, case studies, projects’ before/after, and occasionally supervise external resources who create or translate visual, video, audio or written content.
  • Fund Development: Support Community Fund Development by co-creating compelling presentations and communication templates.
  • Events: Provide support to ALUS communities across the country in organizing virtual and in-person events. Offer advice, shares best practices, assists in the creation of visual aids, etc.
  • Local Media Relations: Help grow long-term and productive relationships with a network of local, and regional media. Build media outreach strategies in collaboration with the communities.
  • Misc: Collaborate on other ALUS projects and initiatives requiring communications expertise.
Skills, Attributes and Experience
  • The basics: At least 5 years’ relevant experience and a university degree in a related field. Knowledge of agriculture, ecosystem services, natural infrastructure and nature restoration and/or previous experience in the environmental nonprofit sector are strong assets.
  • Bilingualism: ALUS being a national organization, you will be working with communities across Canada and in the United States. Being perfectly bilingual, English and French, written and spoken, is mandatory and will be put to the test.
  • Strategic Planning and Execution: You master the art of developing and implementing comprehensive community engagement strategies and social media campaigns that respect the overall communications & marketing strategy and align with organizational goals.
  • Project Management: You possess strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring timely completion and high-quality outcomes.
  • Relationship Building: You have a proven ability to build and maintain strong relationships with community members, stakeholders, and partners, and you are eager to share your expertise with others.
  • Event Coordination: You are skilled in planning, organizing, and executing community events and activities.
  • Digital & Design Expertise: You master social media platforms, are familiar with tool such as Canva, Mailchimp, WordPress, and comfortable using and analyzing web analytics (Google Analytics) and keeping abreast of the latest SEO strategies. Basic knowledge of a video editing tool is an asset.
  • Adaptability and Innovation: You are flexible and able to adjust strategies and approaches based on changing community dynamics and feedback. You excel at developing new and effective ways to engage and communicate.
  • Mindset: You have a high level of personal integrity and excel at working independently on several projects at once. You have a collaborative and creative attitude and enjoy being part of multidisciplinary teams.
Working Environment and Compensation
  • Normal working hours are Monday to Friday; 35 hours per week, remote.
  • Occasionally, extended hours and weekend work may be required.
  • Some travel may be required to attend field visits, events, and in-person team meetings.
  • ALUS Canada does not have a centralized office space; The person will work from a home office, which may be located anywhere in Canada with reliable access to high-speed internet and a safe, ergonomic, and private workspace.
