The Agency
The Calgary John Howard Society (CJHS) is a charity that reduces crime and makes Calgary communities safer by helping youth and adults make positive changes and move away from criminal behaviour. We do this by addressing the root causes of crime through housing, education, employment programs and support so that individuals have alternatives to breaking the law. The Program
The Manager of Communications & Fund Development is an exciting opportunity to be involved in developing a new department at CJHS, and it will require someone who can build it from the ground up. As a new key leadership role at CJHS, you will be responsible for telling our story, elevating our impact, and securing the resources needed to sustain and grow our mission. This position oversees internal and external communications, media relations, marketing, public engagement, and fund development strategies. Building bridges with the public, partners, funders, and donors is a crucial piece of this role. Alongside the Executive Director, you’ll lead the development and implementation of integrated communication, and fundraising plans that reflect our values, amplify the voices of the people we serve, and position CJHS as a trusted and innovative community leader.
The Position
Communications (50%)
· Lead the development and implementation of CJHS’s strategic communications plan.
· Oversee all external communications including media releases, newsletters, reports, web content, and social media.
· Develop key messaging and storytelling that promotes public understanding of CJHS’s mission and impact.
· Support internal communications and ensure alignment across departments.
· Maintain and evolve CJHS’s visual identity and brand presence.
· Lead the development of communication materials to support the organization and fundraising initiatives (annual report, case for support, etc.).
Fund Development (40%)
· Create and implement a fund development strategy to grow individual, corporate, and community giving.
· Build and steward relationships with donors and philanthropic partners.
· Develop campaigns, appeals, and donor recognition strategies.
· Coordinate fundraising events and community engagement opportunities.
· Prepare compelling funding proposals and impact reports for prospective supporters.
Leadership & Strategic Planning (10%)
· Collaborate with senior leadership on organizational strategy and planning.
· Lead or support cross-functional initiatives that enhance organizational sustainability.
· Supervise and mentor staff, students, or volunteers supporting communications and fundraising activities.
· Monitor and report on KPIs for communications and fund development.
Qualifications
· Degree or diploma in Communications, Public Relations, Fundraising, Nonprofit Management, or a related field.
· Minimum 5 years of experience in communications or fund development role, ideally in a nonprofit or social impact setting with some leadership experience.
· Proven experience creating content, managing campaigns, and engaging diverse audiences.
· Excellent writing, editing, storytelling, and interpersonal skills.
· Strategic thinker with strong project management and organizational abilities.
· Proficiency in digital communications tools (e.g., WordPress, Mailchimp, Canva, social media platforms, donor management systems).
