Overview
Our client is seeking a Manager, Commercial Property Accounting to play a central role in shaping its commercial and retail property portfolio. This new position offers the chance to build an accounting platform from the ground up, influence processes and systems, implement advanced technology, foster cross-department collaboration, and establish best practices that drive operational excellence across the enterprise.
Responsibilities
- Oversee the implementation of the Yardi commercial module by applying your expertise in retail or commercial property accounting to ensure meticulous system configuration.
- Collaborate with Operations, Asset Management, and other principal stakeholders to design robust accounting processes that facilitate efficient workflows tailored to commercial property requirements.
- Establish new commercial tenant accounts within the accounting platform, ensuring scrupulous accuracy and adherence to all pertinent regulations and internal protocols.
- Develop and enhance full-cycle property accounting procedures encompassing accruals, book closings, financial statement preparation, operating cost recoveries, reconciliations, and comprehensive reporting.
- Foster close cooperation with both internal teams and external partners to guarantee seamless execution of accounting operations as the platform matures.
- Continuously monitor system performance post-implementation, identifying opportunities for refinement and driving ongoing process improvements.
- Provide authoritative guidance on best practices for operating cost recovery (CAM) calculations while ensuring precise allocation of expenses across multiple properties.
- Prepare detailed financial reports for investors as well as internal management, upholding transparency and clarity in all communications.
- Support the transition from individual contributor to team leader by mentoring junior staff as direct reports are incorporated over time.
- Uphold rigorous standards for data integrity, quality control, and compliance throughout all facets of commercial property accounting.
Qualifications
- Possess a minimum of five years’ experience in property accounting within retail (preferred) or commercial/office environments with substantive exposure to operating cost recovery (CAM).
- Demonstrate at least two years of people-management experience evidencing your capacity to guide and support colleagues effectively.
- Exhibit a proven record in designing and instituting commercial or retail accounting platforms together with associated recording processes.
- Display advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel including v-lookups, pivot tables, SUMIFS, INDEX functions for intricate data analysis.
- Show readiness to broaden focus beyond retail/commercial specialisation into multi-family residential accounting when necessary.
- Bring comprehensive full-cycle property accounting experience covering accruals, book closings, financial statement preparation, operating-cost recoveries/reconciliations, investor relations, and stakeholder engagement.
- Hold a CPA designation (preferred but not obligatory); candidates without CPA but possessing extensive industry experience are encouraged to apply.
- Maintain strong working knowledge of Yardi software; prior system implementation experience is advantageous though not essential.
- Exemplify excellent written and verbal communication skills facilitating effective interaction at all levels of management.
- Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability within rapidly evolving or start-up environments coupled with meticulous attention to detail.
