JOB DESCRIPTION:

  1. Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines.
  2. Manages the work activities, performance and development of subordinate staff.
  3. Coaches, leads and develops underwriters and participates in the development of underwriting training.
  4. Makes recommendations on underwriting policy and pricing strategy to management.
  5. Reviews and manages the application of underwriting policy and pricing for all risks within an assigned book of business.
  6. Prepares and presents operational reports to management.
  7. Drives regional and branch initiatives and business strategies.
  8. May market products and services through agencies or through the brokerage community.
  9. Develops, maintains and cultivates agency and/or broker relationships to ensure positive and profitable outcomes.
  10. Keeps current on provincial/territory issues and regulations, industry activity and trends. May participate in industry trade groups.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
• Ability to effectively lead, coach and develop underwriting staff.
• Advanced technical expertise, underwriting skill and knowledge of insurance and underwriting principles, practices and procedures.
• Strong communication, negotiation and presentation skills. Ability to effectively interact with all levels of company internal and external business partners.
• Advanced analytical and problem solving skills, with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects.
• Ability to deal with ambiguous situations and issues.
• Creativity in resolving unique and challenging business problems.
• Ability to achieve business goals and objectives.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software.

Education and Experience
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Professional designations preferred.
• Typically a minimum eight years underwriting experience.
