Job summary

Stoney Nakoda Child & Family Services is seeking an experienced Manager to lead and oversee multiple child and family programs. You will supervise Supervisors, practitioners, and staff, ensuring culturally safe, trauma‑informed service delivery that supports child safety and family wellbeing.

You will collaborate with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community partners, while guiding accreditation, quality improvement, and strategic initiatives as part of the Senior Leadership Team.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor or Master of Social Work with ACSW registration in good standing.
  • Minimum five years in Child and Family Services or Child Intervention.
  • Minimum three years of leadership or supervisory experience.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary teams; Indigenous community experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of trauma‑informed, culturally responsive practices.

Responsibilities

Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of Child and Family Services, theManagerprovides strategic leadership and operational oversight for assigned Child and Family Services programs and service delivery teams.

The Manager is responsible for ensuring the effective delivery of culturally responsive child and family services that promote child safety, family preservation, permanency, and community well‑being while ensuring compliance with applicable legislation, organizational policies, professional standards, and service agreements.

The successful candidate provides leadership, supervision, coaching, mentorship, and performance management to Supervisors, Child Intervention Practitioners, Family Enhancement Workers, administrative staff, and multidisciplinary teams.

The Manager oversees the day‑to‑day operations of assigned program areas, which may include:

  • Caregiver Supports
  • Prevention and Community Programs

The Manager ensures services are delivered in a manner that is culturally safe, trauma‑informed, strengths‑based, and reflective of Stoney Nakoda values and community priorities.

As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the Manager contributes to organizational planning, strategic initiatives, policy development, quality improvement, accreditation, financial stewardship, and organizational change while supporting continuous service excellence.

The Manager builds collaborative relationships with community partners, Elders, schools, health providers, justice agencies, Indigenous organizations, and government representatives to ensure coordinated service delivery that supports positive outcomes for children and families.

The position also participates in an on‑call leadership rotation and provides after‑hours operational support as required.

Key ResponsibilitiesLeadership & Supervision
  • Provide leadership, supervision, mentorship, coaching, and performance management to assigned staff.
  • Foster a positive, respectful, collaborative, and culturally safe workplace.
  • Support employee engagement, professional development, succession planning, and continuous learning.
  • Conduct performance reviews, probationary evaluations, coaching conversations, and disciplinary processes as required.
  • Promote accountability, ethical practice, and high professional standards.
Program & Service Delivery
  • Oversee the delivery of child intervention and family enhancement services.
  • Ensure all services comply with legislation, organizational policies, practice standards, and delegated authority requirements.
  • Monitor service quality, case management practices, documentation, and outcomes.
  • Support complex case consultations and provide guidance on high‑risk situations.
  • Ensure timely decision‑making that prioritizes child safety and family well‑being.
  • Promote family preservation and reunification whenever safely possible.
  • Support culturally appropriate permanency planning and placement decisions.
  • Promote Stoney Nakoda language, culture, traditions, ceremonies, and community values throughout service delivery.
  • Ensure children maintain meaningful connections to family, community, identity, and culture.
  • Collaborate respectfully with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community leaders.
  • Support culturally responsive and trauma‑informed practices across all programs.
  • Advocate for Indigenous‑led approaches to child and family well‑being.
Operational Management
  • Manage program operations, workload allocation, staffing, scheduling, and service delivery priorities.
  • Contribute to annual operational planning and strategic initiatives.
  • Monitor budgets, expenditures, contracts, and resource allocation.
  • Identify service gaps and develop recommendations for program improvements.
  • Support quality assurance, accreditation activities, audits, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Stakeholder Relationships
  • Develop strong partnerships with community agencies, schools, health providers, justice partners, First Nations organizations, and government ministries.
  • Represent SNCFS on committees, working groups, and community initiatives.
  • Resolve service concerns and complex stakeholder issues collaboratively and professionally.
  • Promote positive relationships with families, caregivers, and community members.
  • Support critical incident management and complex child protection matters.
  • Ensure organizational risks are identified, assessed, and mitigated.
  • Participate in emergency response planning and after‑hours leadership coverage.
  • Ensure confidentiality and privacy requirements are consistently maintained.
Professional Responsibilities
  • Participate in leadership meetings, planning sessions, and organizational initiatives.
  • Support organizational change management and continuous improvement.
  • Maintain current knowledge of legislation, policy, best practices, and Indigenous child welfare.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director.
Qualifications Education
  • Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) or Master’s of Social Work (MSW) from a recognized post‑secondary institution.
  • Registration in good standing with the Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW).
  • Equivalent education and leadership experience may be considered.
Experience
  • Minimum five years of progressively responsible experience in Child and Family Services or Child Intervention.
  • Minimum three years of leadership or supervisory experience.
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience working within Indigenous communities is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in family enhancement, permanency planning, child protection, and complex case management.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Extensive knowledge of child intervention legislation and best practices.
  • Strong understanding of trauma‑informed, culturally responsive, and family‑centred practice.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous child welfare principles, Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action, and Jordan’s Principle.
  • Strong leadership, coaching, and employee development skills.
  • Excellent conflict resolution, negotiation, and decision‑making abilities.
  • Strong communication, relationship‑building, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage organizational change and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Strong financial management and operational planning skills.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and political acumen.
  • Ability to analyze complex situations and make sound decisions under pressure.
Employment Requirements
  • Registration in good standing with the Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW).
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
  • Reliable vehicle and willingness to travel throughout the service area.
  • Current Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search.
  • Child Intervention Record Check.
  • Ability to participate in an on‑call leadership rotation.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends when operationally required.
Assets
  • Knowledge of Stoney Nakoda language, culture, traditions, governance, and history.
  • Experience working within First Nations Child and Family Services.
  • Experience with delegated First Nations agencies.
