The Canaccord Learning Commons (CLC) and David Lam Management Research Library (DLam) is an integrated unit providing collections, technology, facilities and services to UBC Sauder and other UBC undergraduate and graduate students, faculty employees and community members. As a part of a vibrant and active unit, that reports to both UBC Library and the UBC Sauder School of business, the CLC delivers academic co-curricular programs, collaborative and silent study spaces, equipment lending, and access to specialized technology and lab spaces to support UBC Sauder students in achieving academic success and developing career-ready skills.
The Manager, Canaccord Learning Commons is responsible for the strategy, vision, implementation and evaluation of co-curricular academic support programs and services, in line with school’s goals, and congruent with library objectives. The Manager provides leadership and strategic direction of the co-curricular programs, to create a framework that enhances student learning and development, and fosters student connection and community.
The Manager leads and manages a team and provides strategic oversight of a comprehensive training and student development plan for the student employees delivering programming.
Work Performed
- Develops, implements, and assesses annual strategic goals, objectives and targets for the Canaccord Learning Commons, in line with the UBC Sauder and UBC Library strategic plans.
- In collaboration with the Head, David Lam Library and Canaccord Learning Commons, develops unit’s key performance indicators (KPIs) and objectives and key results (OKRs).
- Consults with multiple stakeholders to make strategic decisions about programming and services that align with and enhance both the UBC Sauder's and the UBC Library's strategic plans.
- Advises the Head in determining the most appropriate supporting organizational structure to deliver the programs and services to meet strategic objectives.
- Assesses and evaluates current offerings and re-designs programs and services, as needed, both in-person and online.
- Evaluates needs and implements programming to target specific student populations (e.g., students in academically high-risk courses, students at risk of discontinuing their studies, etc.).
- Creates metrics for the assessment of CLC programs and services; contributes to the development of the assessment practices for the whole unit.
- Develops and implements administrative policies and procedures for CLC programs and services for employees, students and faculty.
- Provides leadership and expertise that influence student development and engagement for undergraduate and graduate students in the school.
- Acts as a champion for peer programs, co-curricular programming, student support programs and services, peer-to-peer models and student development at UBC Sauder and across the university; participates in UBC Sauder and UBC advisory committees and makes recommendations on new initiatives and programs and service enhancements and improvements.
- Provides strategic oversight of a comprehensive training and student development plan for the student employees delivering peer programming.
- Proactively seeks and develops opportunities to develop strong student communities in order to enhance student learning and experience.
- Takes a leadership role in shared David Lam Library/Learning Commons initiatives. Contributes to the unit-wide strategic planning, operations, and delivery of services.
- Identifies undergraduate and graduate student demands and needs and links to relevant campus initiatives, as appropriate.
- Provides strategic oversight of the Canaccord Learning Commons’ programs, spaces, and services and to the operation and delivery of services in the Learning Commons' specialty lab spaces.
- Manages decisions in complex cases related to learning commons’ services, spaces, and employees; handles escalations for extremely sensitive or unusual matters.
- Develops and manages the Learning Commons budget and long-term financial planning. Contributes to budget planning for the David Lam Library.
- Provides day-to-day managerial direction and guidance to the Canaccord Learning Commons’ team; sets objectives, monitors and manages workloads. Recommends and implements modifications to meet operational requirements.
- Cultivates, builds and maintains positive and collaborative relationships with stakeholders across UBC Sauder and UBC.
- Creates comprehensive annual reports for the CLC and collaborates on internal and external reporting for the whole unit.
- Liaises with colleagues in other UBC Library branches and represents the Library and Learning Commons on school and cross campus committees, task forces and working groups as needed.
- Demonstrates discretion and understanding in resolving sensitive issues and disputes; guides and manages expectations of those facing difficult or complex situations.
- Assumes responsibility for special projects assigned by the Head and may act for Head as needed.
- In the absence of the Head or Acting Head, may act as Emergency Contact, in consultation with the Associate University Librarian.
- Performs other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three to four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree is preferred.
- Experience in student services or student engagement-focused roles, preferably working with undergraduate and/or graduate learners. Previous experience supporting/working with faculty members is an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to evaluate and apply literature, research, institutional data, and theoretical frameworks to establish, manage, and evaluate evidence-based programs and services.
- Prior experience in higher education related to administrative and student services with demonstrated abilities in supervising and managing a team.
- Previous experience developing, managing, and measuring effective co-curricular student programming.
- Excellent verbal and written communication.
- Ability to make thoughtful decisions and effectively communicate these decisions to colleagues and students.
- Ability to work with considerable autonomy, and as part of a cross-functional team.
- Proven ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of stakeholders. Ability to facilitate dialogue between stakeholders with diverse needs and develop creative solutions to complex problems.
- Openness to experimenting with and improvising new ways of approaching processes, tasks or problems.
- Commitment to discretion and understanding when working with complex, sensitive, or difficult issues.
- Ability to manage a broad range of responsibilities and programs, including a proven ability to effectively prioritize tasks in a complex environment and to meet external deadlines and set deadlines for oneself and for direct reports.
- Knowledge of University systems, processes, policies and decision-making structures is an asset.
- Ability to work some evenings and weekends as required.
Compensation Range
$6,747.50 - $9,701.42 CAD Monthly
The Compensation Range is the span between the minimum and maximum base salary for a position. The midpoint of the range is approximately halfway between the minimum and the maximum and represents an employee that possesses full job knowledge, qualifications and experience for the position. In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.
