Role Overview:

The Corporate Strategy group at Hydro One develops transformative business strategies to drive earnings growth and diversification, supporting innovation and the energy transition. The team collaborates with various business units to execute strategic initiatives, evaluate new business opportunities, and explore investments in areas like Venture Capital, 'behind-the-meter' products, EV infrastructure, renewable energy, and data monetization.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Participate in strategy development, market research, financial evaluation, and analysis.
  • Conduct market analyses to identify industry trends and new business models.
  • Support the implementation of corporate strategies by organizing workshops, preparing presentations, and facilitating initiatives.
  • Assist in evaluating opportunities through business case development and financial modeling.
  • Develop clear communication materials for senior executives, including the CEO and Board of Directors.

During the internship, students will learn technical skills such as:

  • Understanding utility operations and corporate development activities at a major Canadian electric utility.
  • Identifying and developing innovative growth opportunities.
  • Enhancing leadership, negotiation, and facilitation skills through engagement with partners and vendors.
  • Building organizational and time management skills under tight deadlines.
  • Strengthening analytical and financial accounting skills.

Selection Criteria:

  • Currently in the 2nd or 3rd year of a Bachelor's degree in engineering, business, finance, accounting, computer science, or related fields.
  • Experience in the electricity industry (power, utilities, renewables) is preferred; experience in oil & gas or mining is also considered.
  • Experience in developing and analyzing financial and strategic models in asset-intensive industries.
  • Proficiency in Excel for financial modeling and analysis.
  • Strong skills in PowerPoint.
  • Understanding of financial statements and electricity industry concepts.
  • Analytical, quantitative, and statistical skills.
  • Innovative mindset with a desire to create value and explore new ideas.
  • Passion for the electricity industry and energy transition.
  • Effective communication with senior management.
