About You / What We Are Looking For
We are seeking a forward-thinking professional to join our Planning & Development Department as a Major Project Planner. This role involves considerable independent judgment, and the use and development of innovative approaches in development planning in an urban context. You will be part of a team responsible for supervising and overseeing the day to day operation of a fast-paced, high volume development application processing section. You are a highly motivated professional who thrives in an environment of continuous improvement dealing with highly complex and diverse land use applications. Other key responsibilities may include updating bylaws, policies and procedures, negotiating community benefits, and researching and recommending process improvements. The position also supervises and mentors professional planning and technical staff and plays a key role in processing complex Master Development Plans and advising on a range of other rezoning and development approval matters.

The successful candidate for this position must be able to exercise independent judgment to spearhead, shape, and finalize various programs and projects. They will also develop and implement politically sensitive public consultation processes that inform planning policies, and in conjunction with the Manager and more senior level staff, develop and present planning process results and recommended policies to Council and their Committees.

Minimum Qualifications
At least 5 years of progressive professional Planning experience, preferably in a municipal setting. A university degree in a related discipline is a requirement, alongside membership or eligibility for membership in a professional association (e.g. Planning Institute of British Columbia; Canadian Institute of Planners) is preferred, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. A valid British Columbia Driver's License (or equivalent) is a requirement.

The ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, consultants and the public, are essential to the incumbent’s success.

Preferred Qualifications
A graduate degree in Community and Regional Planning is desired. Proven experience in long- range urban planning project management and leading the development of land use visions and plans, urban redevelopment, transit-oriented and ‘greenfield’ development, urban design, and social and multicultural planning will also be considered an asset.

What We Offer:
This CUPE position has an hourly rate of $61.29 - $72.55. The rate of pay is based on a variety of factors including qualifications, knowledge, experience and skills.

You will have the chance to join a rapidly growing and diverse team dedicated to supporting the local community, and be able to engage in variety of learning and development opportunities.
