Job summary

The Salvation Army London Centre of Hope in London, ON is seeking a Maintenance Worker to perform repairs, deliver essential upkeep, and ensure safety and cleanliness of our facilities.

Reporting to the Environmental Services Manager, you will inspect the property, address maintenance requests, and contribute to a safe, welcoming environment for staff and clients while following OH&S policies and building standards.

Qualifications

  • Minimum secondary school diploma; additional facility services training preferred.
  • Valid Ontario Class G driver's license; driver’s abstract required.
  • Background check with vulnerable sector screening required.
  • Experience with general maintenance and operation of hand/power tools is expected.

Responsibilities

  • Perform repairs and maintenance as directed by the Maintenance Coordinator.
  • Inspect property for damage and report findings to supervisor.
  • Maintain daily cleanliness of the surrounding property and assist with safety procedures.
  • Follow OH&S Act, safety policies, and security-related requirements.
  • Complete all shift duties and support environmental services as needed.
  • Collaborate with Centre of Hope staff and external contacts as required.

Accountabilities
Role Specific Responsibilities

Perform repairs and maintenance as requested or assigned by the Maintenance Coordinator & Environmental Services Manager. Inspect the property and building for signs of damage and report to the Maintenance Coordinator & Environmental Services Manager. Maintain daily cleanliness of the surrounding property by removing refuse or debris, seasonally shovel and salt walkways as needed and requested. Assist Maintenance Coordinator as assigned by Environmental Services Manager. As required and as applicable, make suggestions that will improve efficiency, working conditions or procedures to the Environmental Services Manager. Ensure all duties assigned to shift are completed. Health and Safety Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures. Work closely with security, identifying any safety and security needs. Responsible for the following, work in compliance with the Ontario Health & Safety Act and Regulations, use personal prescribed safety equipment and clothing as directed by the employer, report workplace hazards, dangers, injuries or illness, work in a manner as required by the employer, and report workplace injuries or illness. Responsible to follow through on all safety and security procedures (including fire) as outlined in the policy and procedures manual. Monitor and report regularly any concern regarding adherence to the acceptable health standards and that physical property is maintained, arranging for repairs as necessary. Perform other position related duties as required.

CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT

Internal: Work cooperatively with staff from various Centre of Hope departments. Participate in regular staff meetings to review operational effectiveness, changes in policies and procedures, and in-service training. External: Community, clients.

MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY

This position reports directly to the Environmental Services Manager or designate. The Maintenance Worker receives work assignments from the Maintenance Coordinator.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The Supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule. Some travel is required. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Normal hours of work – Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 4:00pm. Hours may vary as per operational requirements and responsibilities and includes a ½ hour paid meal break where applicable. Normal location of work is at: 281 Wellington Street, London, ON N6B 2L4 The above responsibilities must be discharged in accordance with the Salvation Army’s Mission Statement, in a professional manner, exemplifying Christian Standards of conduct.

Education, Qualifications and Certifications

Minimum Secondary School Diploma. Additional training in Facility Services preferred. Knowledge of building systems preferred. Valid Ontario Class “G” Drivers license; a copy of a current driver’s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. Non-Violent Crisis Intervention or valid First Aid is considered an asset. Provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. The screening is secured either through the National Canadian Policy Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment. May require screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements

A minimum of one year of prior related experience including general familiarity with maintenance procedures and equipment. Demonstrated professional maintenance skills in minor plumbing, electrical, carpentry and painting. Capable of operating hand and power tools. Develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.

Skills and Capabilities

Demonstrated ability to use sound judgment when making decisions. Excellent organizational skills, ability to follow detailed instructions. Demonstrated ability to maintain successful working relationships; and to deal with people in a pleasant, professional and responsible manner. Strong oral and written communication skills. Self-motivated and disciplined. Maintain confidentiality in all matters pertaining to clientele and coworkers of The Salvation Army London Centre of Hope.

Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $19.23 to $20.27 with a maximum of $21.30. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
