Job Description:

Position Purpose Summary: Performs routine and preventative maintenance and repair procedures on all mechanical equipment and utility systems at the Ministry Unit under the supervision of the Managing Director/Supervisor.

This is a temporary position for a 3-month period.

Accountabilities & Job Duties:

  • Implement preventative maintenance procedures for related equipment, recommend and perform minor and some moderate repairs (program vehicles, faucets, toilets, and light fixtures).
  • Undertake minor renovation projects including drywalling, electrical repairs, plumbing, carpentry, and painting; report safety concerns and major repair issues.
  • Conduct minor troubleshooting of building systems.
  • Assist in developing specifications for tenders and monitor the quality of workmanship of outside contractors and maintenance personnel.
  • Ensure supplies are received, stored, and redistributed appropriately.
  • Establish and monitor preventative maintenance procedures; recommend repairs and purchases as needed.
  • Maintain a personal log book recording all tasks undertaken during shifts.
  • Contact contractors for service as outlined in pre-established documents.
  • Prioritize health and safety of all employees through safety huddles, notifications, supervisory communication, and adherence to regulations and policies.
  • Oversee equipment and repair parts data entry and management.
  • Ensure the general upkeep of the facility, including scheduled maintenance and external property maintenance (mowing, snow/ice removal, cleaning, gardening, pruning, raking).
  • Monitor security and report breaches.
  • Communicate regularly with the Managing Director and Occupational Health and Safety Committee as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Communication & Relationship Management:

  • Communicate effectively with shelter guests, clients, staff, volunteers, contractors, and inspectors.

Managerial & Technical Responsibilities:

  • Report directly to: Supervisor
  • Direct reports: None

Financial & Materials Management:

  • May be authorized to spend small amounts of cash.

Working Conditions:

  • Work location includes inside and outside the facility.
  • Operate equipment and tools; lift and carry objects weighing 20-50 pounds; work in varying temperatures and conditions, including noise, confined spaces, and exposure to chemicals and potentially dangerous situations.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • WHMIS training.
  • Valid BC driver’s license.

Experience & Skills:

  • 1-2 years of related experience in maintenance, repairs, custodial work.
  • Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism.
  • Ability to follow instructions, relate courteously to others, and undergo necessary background checks.

Compensation:

The target salary range is $23.95 to $24.33 per hour, with a maximum of $24.70. Placement depends on experience, skills, and internal equity.
