Job summary

Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug Dibenjikewin Onaakonikewin (KIDO) seeks a Maintenance Worker to repair and maintain vehicles and facilities, including plumbing, electrical, and carpentry tasks. The role reports to the Assistant Director and follows standard KI operating hours with potential shift adjustments.

The ideal candidate has at least five years of frontline maintenance experience, strong problem-solving, and the ability to travel for trainings and licensing.

Qualifications

  • Experience in carpentry, electrical, furnace maintenance, plumbing, or related trades.
  • Five (5) years of frontline custodial or maintenance experience.
  • Ability to travel to attend trainings and certifications, including First Aid and WHMIS.
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s License; Class B asset.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds and work in confined spaces.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general or routine maintenance on office equipment and facilities.
  • Inspect and maintain vehicles; operate basic diagnostic equipment for repairs.
  • Assess repairs and request specialized assistance as needed.
  • Maintain inventory of maintenance supplies and reorder.
  • Snow shoveling and spreading sand/salt to keep areas safe.
  • Work independently while coordinating with KI staff to meet building needs.
  • Follow MDK Policy and KI HR guidelines; uphold confidentiality.
  • Complete required maintenance training and other duties as assigned.

Position Summary

The Maintenance Worker’s primary responsibility is maintenance and repair of KIDO vehicles and other general maintenance and repairs of assigned equipment, including plumbing, electrical, basic carpentry, heating and cooling, and other building system needs. This position will report to the KIDO Assistant Director. The hours of work will be from 9:00am to 5:00pm during regular KIDO operating hours during the week, but there may be adjustments to the schedule and/or occasional shift work assigned as needed.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • To perform general or routine maintenance on office equipment.
  • To inspect and maintain vehicles, and be able to operate basic diagnostic vehicle equipment to determine repairs needed.
  • To have logical skills to understand operational manuals of appliances to provide basic service and maintenance.
  • To be able to determine the extent of repairs and to request specialized assistance.
  • Perform routine or general repairs and maintenance only that do not require a specialized technician for drywall, window repair, doors, painting, and other building fixtures and equipment.
  • To maintain an inventory of maintenance and service equipment and products and to reorder.
  • Perform snow shoveling duties to keep areas safe, as well as spreading sand/salt as needed.
  • Duties will be carried out independently most of the time, but the Maintenance Worker must also work as a team alongside other KIDO staff to ensure that they keep clear lines of communication on the needs of the KIDO buildings and that there is a reciprocity of respect among all KIDO staff.
  • Follow and understand the MDK Policy, KI Human Resources Manual, KIDO Workplace Violence and Harassment Policy, and other KIDO-Approved Policies (by KIDO’s DOO Board) for KIDO staff.
  • Participate and complete training as required under KIDO, as well as other training specific to maintenance duties.
  • Other duties as assigned by the KIDO Director or Assistant Directors.
Qualifications
  • Experience in the field of carpentry, electrical, furnace maintenance, plumbing, and/or other related trade areas are a must; any education and/or certifications would be an asset.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of practical work experience in a frontline custodial setting, including vehicle maintenance.
  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Must have a proven work record of reliability and professional conduct.
  • Must have demonstrate knowledge in building maintenance and problem-solving.
  • Must possess good verbal and written communication skills, including Anishininiimowin, the language of KI.
  • Must be able to travel to attain First Aid, WHMIS, and general maintenance and repair certification, including a Driver's License.
  • Must possess a valid Ontario Driver’s License, with a Class “B” Driver’s License an asset.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds at a time.
  • Must be physically fit to climb ladders, and bend or crawl into confined spaces.
  • Professional integrity and ability to maintain confidentiality are essential.
  • Experience in time management when assigned duties and ability to work flexible hours as required, including shift-work.
  • Working knowledge of the KIDO principles, mission, and values.
  • A Criminal Record Check, with a Vulnerable Sector Check, is required.
  • ,Ability to travel is required (Sioux Lookout, Thunder Bay); with potential for short-notice.
