ABOUT THIS CAREER OPPORTUNITY
Black & McDonald Limited is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic at our location in Ottawa, Ontario. The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and repair of building systems and equipment within a facility environment. Working under the direction of the Facility Manager, the incumbent will operate plant systems, perform preventative and corrective maintenance, and respond to service requests and emergencies.
This role requires a strong understanding of mechanical systems, water treatment processes, and building automation systems. The ideal candidate holds a valid 3rd Class Operating Engineer license and demonstrates a proactive approach to safety, compliance, and continuous improvement in facility operations.This is a union position.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Start up, operate, and shut down plant equipment and systems, including using a computerized Building Automation System (BAS).
- Monitor plant equipment to ensure efficient operation and optimize fuel usage.
- Verify daily environmental control readings and ensure they are within acceptable standards.
- Maintain accurate operating logs and record equipment readings as required.
- Perform preventive maintenance and inspections in accordance with established schedules; carry out corrective maintenance as needed.
- Identify and report potential areas of non-compliance with applicable codes and standards and recommend corrective actions.
- Report any anomalies in system performance, equipment condition, or operating environment.
- Operate, maintain, and service water treatment systems, conduct water quality tests in accordance with procedures.
- Respond promptly to emergencies and service desk complaints; notify the Facility Manager immediately in the event of an emergency.
- Attend service calls, including minor repairs and coordination with subcontractors as necessary.
- Verify the quality and completeness of work performed by subcontractors.
- Assist with inventory monitoring and material procurement as required.
- Support project-related work, including system replacements and component repairs.
- Conduct system investigations in collaboration with the Facility Manager, as needed.
- Respond to after-hours emergency calls on a rotational or as-assigned basis.
- Perform general maintenance tasks such as sweeping, cleaning, painting, garbage removal, snow removal, and assisting other technicians or mechanics as required.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
- Valid 3rdClass Operating Engineer License.
WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- 3-5 years of experience in building operations, mechanical maintenance, or a related field.
- Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, boilers, chillers, pumps, and building automation systems (BAS).
- Experience with preventative and corrective maintenance procedures.
- Familiarity with water treatment systems and the ability to perform water quality testing.
- Strong understanding of occupational health and safety regulations, building codes, and environmental standards.
- Proficient in using Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) and Microsoft Office applications.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and equipment manuals.
- Understanding of calibration values and basic mathematics.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Physical ability to perform manual tasks, including lifting, climbing, and working in confined spaces or at heights.
- Must be able to attain and maintain Reliability Security Clearance.
- Should hold a valid G Driver’s License and able to retain a clean vehicle record check.
- Willing to work rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays.
- Ability to respond to after-hours emergencies and participate in an on-call rotation, as required.
- Bilingual in French & English preferred.
