Job summary

Optima Living is seeking a Maintenance Assistant Level I who reports to the Maintenance Manager to perform basic maintenance across buildings, grounds, and equipment, including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and painting.

You will uphold resident safety and dignity by aligning with policies, supporting contracts, completing preventive checks, keeping areas clean, and contributing to a safe, well-maintained home for seniors.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 or equivalent education.
• Experience in basic plumbing, electrical, building repairs and carpentry is an asset.
• CPR and First Aid certification is an asset.
• Valid driver’s license is required.
• Ability to communicate professionally and maintain respectful relationships with residents, team members, contractors and visitors.

Responsibilities

• Performs basic repairs and minor upgrades with minimal disruption to residents and team members.
• Assembles and repairs basic furniture and installs simple fixtures such as pictures and baseboards.
• Prepares and paints small areas requiring touch-ups and assists with larger areas as needed.
• Assists with cleaning and lubricating equipment like wheelchairs and carts.
• Ensures that basic equipment checks are conducted as needed (e.g., vehicles, exterior, roof, HVAC).
• Assists with basic electrical tasks.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, the Maintenance Assistant Level I performs a variety of basic maintenance duties related to buildings, grounds, and equipment such as electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and painting.
All duties and responsibilities are carried out in alignment with Optima Living’s mission, vision, and values, promoting person-centered care by respecting the uniqueness, dignity, and self-determination of residents to promote maximum personal and functional independence. These duties are performed within the framework of established organizational policies and procedures, industry best practices, while adhering to applicable regulations and standards.

• Performs basic repairs and minor upgrades with minimal disruption to residents and team members.

• Assists with basic electrical tasks.
• Unclogs basic plumbing fixtures like sinks and toilets.
• Supports contractors needs as directed by the Maintenance Manager.
• Identifies and reports defective equipment to the Maintenance Manager.
• Maintains clean and hazard-free work areas.
• Helps with basic exterior and grounds maintenance.
• Replenishes supplies and organizes storage areas.
• Assists with garbage and recycling duties.
• Supports snow removal efforts for safety.
• Assists and completes basic preventive maintenance checks and documentation.
• Observes and reports pool conditions as applicable.
• Ensures a safe and sanitary environment for team members and residents through adherence to organizational standards and protocols.
• Promptly reports unsafe conditions, incidents, or concerns to supervisor, General Manager or Health & Safety Committee.
• Responds promptly during emergency codes in alignment with organizational standards and protocols.
• Contributes to quality improvement initiatives by sharing ideas and providing feedback.
• Demonstrates knowledge of and compliance with Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
• Ensures adherence to infection control policies and procedures through regular audits, observations, and investigations.
• Maintains strict confidentiality of resident medical and personal information in accordance with privacy legislation.
• Completes orientation upon hire and annual mandatory education as assigned.
• Supports new team members through their orientation process.
• Participates in team meetings and stays informed on relevant internal communications.
• Performs other duties as required to support operational needs.

Qualifications & Experience

• Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent education isrequired.
• Experience in basic plumbing, electricity, building repairs and carpentry is an asset
• Skilled in building repairs, painting and finishes, safety procedures, property maintenance, plumbing,heatingand air conditioning is an asset.
• Experience in a residential care or mental health environment is an asset.
• Maintains a valid driver’s license.
• CPR and First Aid certification is an asset.
• Ability to communicate professionally and maintain respectful relationships with residents, team members, contractors, volunteers and visitors.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
• Demonstrates the ability to effectively organize, prioritize and problem solve.
• Ability to work independently and in cooperation with others.
• Ability to manage and resolve difficult and challenging situations effectively and respectfully.
• Physical and mental ability to carry out the duties of the position including adherence to provincial health legislation.
• Ability to properly operate and maintain cleaning and maintenance equipment.
• Computer literacy skills required.
• Flexibility to work a variety of shiftsand respond to on-call duties during off-hours.
