Job summary

RBC Borealis in Toronto seeks a Machine Learning Software Engineer Team Lead for AI Solutions to guide ML-based product development. You will lead ML engineers, set technical strategy, and deliver high‑quality solutions aligned with RBC goals.

Stay ahead of Gen AI advances, mentor engineers, and contribute hands-on coding when needed to ensure timely milestone delivery across streams.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Computer Science or a related technical field.
  • 7+ years of experience as a software engineer.
  • 1+ years of experience in technical leadership, setting strategy across multiple work streams.
  • Hands-on experience in Gen AI technologies and understanding Gen AI product life cycle.
  • Experience with Machine Learning systems.
  • Strong communication skills bridging technical and non-technical teams.
  • Experience mentoring and coaching junior engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and guide development of machine learning systems, making critical technical decisions.
  • Stay ahead of ML/AI advancements and determine their applicability to our business objectives.
  • Drive technical excellence through code reviews, design discussions, and hands-on problem-solving when challenges arise.
  • Remain hands-on with the team, occasionally contributing code and participating in delivery as needed.
  • Lead a team of ML engineers, breaking down complex ML projects into milestones and delegating accordingly.
  • Coach and mentor team members to empower them to make sound decisions independently.

We are looking for a Machine Learning Software Engineer Team Lead for AI Solutions. The role focuses on technical leadership with the goal of delivering products for the financial services industry. The candidate will lead a team of individual contributors, providing technical direction, day‑to‑day guidance and support. Ensures the team delivers high‑quality solutions aligned with project and company goals.

Your responsibilities include:
Technical Leadership
  • Architect and guide development of machine learning systems, making critical technical decisions that shape project success;
  • Stay ahead of ML/AI advancements and determine their applicability to our business objectives;
  • Drive technical excellence through code reviews, design discussions, and hands‑on problem‑solving when challenges arise;
  • Remain hands‑on with the team, occasionally contributing code and participating in delivery as needed.
Team Management
  • Lead a team of ML engineers, starting with a small group of individual contributors;
  • Break down complex ML projects into executable milestones, delegating effectively while maintaining accountability;
  • Coach and mentor team members through technical challenges, empowering them to make sound decisions independently.
You’re our ideal candidate if you have:
  • A degree in Computer Science or a related technical field;
  • 7+ years of experience as a software engineer;
  • 1+ years of experience in technical leadership, you are comfortable in setting the technical strategy for your team across multiple work streams;
  • Hands on experience in Gen AI technologies and deep understanding of the Gen AI product life cycle;
  • Experience with Machine Learning systems;
  • Exceptional communication skills, bridging the gap between technical and non technical team members;
  • Experience in managing/mentoring/coaching people and enabling and empowering junior engineers.
