Backed by a legacy of engineering excellence, reliability and industry-leading customer service, Telesat has grown to be one of the largest and most successful global satellite operators.

Telesat Lightspeed, our revolutionary Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite network, scheduled to begin service in 2027, will revolutionize global broadband connectivity for enterprise users by delivering a combination of high capacity, security, resiliency and affordability with ultra-low latency and fiber-like speeds. Telesat is headquartered in Ottawa, Canada, and has offices and facilities around the world.

The company’s state-of-the-art fleet consists of 14 GEO satellites, the Canadian payload on ViaSat-1 and one LEO 3 demonstration satellite. For more information, follow Telesat on X and LinkedIn or visit www.telesat.com

Our System Modeling team architects, develops, and maintains the Telesat Lightspeed System Model application, a state-of-the-art engineering software tool running on high performance computing (HPC) infrastructure for the modeling of resource allocation, and evaluating end-to-end system performance of the Telesat Lightspeed satellite constellation.

As a Senior System Engineer, the selected candidate will participate actively in the development of the algorithms needed in the operation, simulation and performance analysis of the Lightspeed Constellation. The selected candidate will work with the Software Development and Quality Assurance teams to efficiently integrate new algorithms, support the upgrade of existing algorithms, and improve testing coverage. In addition, the Senior System Engineer will assess the performance of the Telesat Lightspeed constellation across various metrics such as throughput, capacity, availability, regulatory compliance and reliability, and study various use cases and scenarios in support of customer deployments.

Main Responsibilities
  • Participate in the development and testing of algorithms in the System Model within the Matlab environment, to improve Lightspeed capabilities, performance and reliability
  • Use state-of-the-art modeling techniques and software tools (using Matlab or other appropriate platforms) to do detailed performance analysis of the Telesat Lightspeed constellation performance in terms of data throughput, latency, satellite hand-over performance, availability, system capacity and regulatory compliance based on equipment performance specifications and predicted performance
  • Closely collaborate with other members of the System Modeling team in the development of algorithms and the execution of analyses
  • Closely collaborate with Software Development team members for the efficient software integration of new and upgraded algorithms
  • Closely collaborate with Quality Assurance team members for the efficient testing of new and upgraded algorithms
  • Closely collaborate with System Design team members for the efficient integration of system operation algorithms within the Lightspeed System
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to junior engineers in the System Modeling team
  • Interface with other Telesat teams regarding topics such as satellite payload and ground segment characteristics, definitions of performance metrics, performance evaluations, and regulatory compliance
  • Support detailed studies of system performance validating the concept of operation with respect to the interface between satellite and ground systems
  • Write technical documentation
  • Follow Agile software development methodologies
Education and Experience Required
