Qualifications

Job description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. Continuous improvement in quality and safety is inherent in this position.

Reporting to the Manager or designate, the LPN Indigenous Liaison Nurse supports healthcare needs and wellness services for Indigenous clients within the scope of practice and professional standards established by the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM), in alignment with Island Health policies and procedures. The LPN will facilitate connections between Indigenous clients and service providers to enhance access to Island Health services with a culturally safe approach.

Travel may be required for this position. Transportation arrangements must meet Island Health's operational requirements and may involve the use of a personal vehicle.

Qualifications: Education, Training, and Experience
  • Current practicing registration as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Two (2) years of recent, relevant nursing experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous health approaches, protocols, and cultural issues.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who identify as Indigenous.
  • Valid BC Driver's License.

  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Sound professional judgment, empathy, tact, and integrity.
  • Ability to prioritize workload, maintain accurate records, and write reports.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills; ability to establish work relationships with staff, the public, and groups.
  • Understanding of Canadian colonization, Indigenous-specific racism, and its impact on Indigenous health and wellness.
  • Ability to adapt and accept change as the program evolves.
  • Use of independence and initiative to plan, organize, and prioritize work.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of BCCNM standards for LPN nursing practice.
  • Ability to provide culturally safe care with a trauma-informed and harm reduction approach.
  • Basic knowledge of health and wellness services available on Vancouver Island for Indigenous peoples (First Nation, Métis, Inuit).
  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic environment with changing priorities and operate related equipment and software applications.
