  • Running and monitoring (including boiler tests) the boiler system in cold months,
  • Forming and stripping of returned concrete blocks,

Loader Operation

The loader is used to organize aggregate bins in the yard. When new loads of aggregate are delivered, the loader is used to form organized piles so that the bin capacity is effectively utilized. The loader is also used to retrieve aggregate from yard bins and load into the hopper to supply the plant conveyor. The loader is also used to remove sediment from the bottom of the washout station.

Boiler Operations

In the cold months, boilers are used to maintain critical temperatures of materials used in the concrete mix. It is the responsibility of the Loader/Yard Operator to operate and monitor the boiler during the months of cold temperatures.

General Maintenance

The Loader/Yard Operator duties include performing general maintenance of equipment that supports the plant operations. This includes lubrication points and minor repairs as necessary.

The Loader/Yard Operator is responsible for such housekeeping tasks as shoveling, sweeping and snow removal.

Block Forming

Excess concrete is often unloaded from the mixers into concrete forms to make blocks used in constructing walls or barricades. These blocks are either sold or used by the Plant. The driver of the mixer unloads the remaining concrete from the mixer. The form is finished using a hand trowel. After 24 to 48 hours, the steel mold is released from the form by removing the pins holding the sides together and prying the mold away from the concrete using a pry-bar.

Receiving and Inspection of aggregates

Inspect ticket to ensure that material received matches material on delivery ticket and sign for it. Inspect material for contamination. Push material into pile.

A Inspections

Inspection of plant equipment, conveyor belts, aggregate gates, scales, air compressor, boiler, collecting hopper, Health, and Safety – housekeeping, guards in place, logbooks. Findings are reported on A Inspection forms.

Air, temperature, and slump testing

Daily Fuel Dip

Removal of tank fuel cap and insertion of dip stick to obtain fuel level. Report readings to plant manager

Reclaimers/Washout (use applicable per location)

Reclaimer separates the slurry water and the sand & stone. The slurry water is pumped back to the plants to be reused in loads. The sand and stone is put back into the pile.

Washout system, water is pumped from this ramp area into a holding tank. This water settles and the sediment goes to the bottom of the tank. The water is then pumped into a separate tank and this water is reused for the trucks to washout again. It is a cycle to contain the washout water.

Loader Inspection / Service

The Loader/Yard Operator must also care for their vehicle by conducting daily inspections of hydraulic lines, tires, and cylinders. This requires a perimeter check of the vehicle, squatting and looking under the vehicle at these various components. The operator must also regularly (daily) grease components of the vehicle using a manual grease gun.

Light Maintenance Duty

The Loader/Yard Operator may occasionally be required to assist maintenance technicians with service to their vehicles. This may require operating specific controls of the loader during trouble-shooting, and occasional use of hand-tools and power tools.
