The SAAAC Autism Centre is a Toronto-based charity whose mission is to make autism services equitable for all Canadians. The Centre provides culturally responsive autism services targeting culturally and linguistically diverse families. Using a multi-disciplinary approach, our Centre offers a dynamic range of services that support the development of individuals on the autism spectrum at all life stages, along with their caregivers.

Your Role on Our Team

The Living’N’Learning program supports young adults living with autism by helping them to learn new and meaningful skills that encourage independent living. Through an engaging curriculum and supportive instructors, our program encourages students to create greater connections to the people and community around them.

The Living’N’Learning program places an emphasis on the following domains of learning:

  1. Independent Living
  2. Job Readiness
  3. Recreational and Physical Activity
  4. Community Integration
  5. Core Academics

The Classroom Facilitator will be responsible for working in the classroom to deliver a group-based program focused on developing independent daily living skills (communication, play, social interactions, functional routines, behavioural self-management, and academics, learning and attention).

Main Responsibilities

  1. Implementing appropriate learning activities and strategies designed to help the participant reach their individual goals
  2. Effectively use ABA related teaching strategies such as Reinforcement, Verbal and Physical Prompts, Shaping, Chaining, Modelling and Fading
  3. Monitor participant behaviours and teaching appropriate behaviours
  4. Address personal care requirements of the participant during each session
  5. Build rapport with participants to support progress
  6. Communicate and record day to day observation
  7. Maintain materials and equipment and a tidy classroom
  8. Keep supervisor and fellow classroom facilitators informed of program concerns and participant progress (e.g. flagging exceptional circumstances and need for program change)
  9. Assist the Program Supervisor in the following:
    1. Intake activities
    2. Assessing individual participant’s skills, abilities, interests, strengths and needs
    3. Preparing and implementing activities as per curriculum
    4. Conducting skill based assessments, curriculum assessments
    5. Development of Service Plans
    6. Evaluation of participant’s progress toward program goals
  10. Participate in classroom and full team meetings; collaborate with other team members
  11. Develop and maintain positive relationships with families, caregivers, partner agencies, internal team and volunteers
  12. Create a positive environment for the participants and team as well as engage in participation with enthusiasm
  13. Review available information pertaining to all participants in the classroom on a regular basis
  14. Ensure overall health and safety of participants enrolled in the program by maintaining a sanitary and safe environment and identifying participants who are unwell.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Undergraduate degree or diploma from a recognized university or college in a related field (e.g., Social Services, Psychology, or Applied Behaviour Analysis)
  2. Minimum one (1) year of experience working with youth or adults, preferably post-graduation
  3. Experience working as an Instructor Therapist in an ABA setting
  4. A combination of education and relevant experience may be considered
  5. Experience supporting individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is an asset
  6. Knowledge of program planning and case management for individuals with developmental disabilities, including an understanding of atypical development
  7. Familiarity with and ability to apply behaviour management strategies effectively
  8. Ability to implement and evaluate individualized and group-based activities that meet participant needs
  9. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust and rapport with participants and their families
  10. Demonstrated cultural competency and ability to interact respectfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences
  11. Reliable, punctual, and responsible in all work-related duties
  12. Skilled in managing challenging behaviours and maintaining professional, positive communication with families
  13. Capable of working collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment, as well as independently
  14. Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  15. Satisfactory and current Vulnerable Sector Check and Criminal Record Check
  16. Proof of full COVID-19 vaccination

Working Conditions

  1. Classroom setting
  2. Must be able to wear a mask and shield throughout their shift
  3. Must be willing to do cleaning duties.
  4. Ability to spend most of the day at the participant’s level, i.e. sitting on the floor, or standing for 1 hour minimum
  5. Able to bend, stoop and lift participant to adult height (up to 20 kg) and to move furniture or equipment to prepare room for programming needs.
