What Are We Looking For?

Position Overview

Reporting to the Operations Manager at Inn from the Cold (The INN), the Live-In Building Caretaker oversees our 10-unit Journey House apartment complex. Journey House supports families who have experiences homelessness to access safe and affordable housing. The Building Caretaker resides in the assigned unit at Journey House, pays a discounted rent, while working part time to maintain the property and ensure Journey House is welcoming home for families.

This position requires 18 hours per week of light maintenance and cleaning inside and around the building and flexibility to respond to maintenance/building emergencies during evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities include ensuring a safe and comfortable building environment, resident communication liaison, regular cleaning and light maintenance both inside the building and outside grounds, and working closely with the Operations Manager when major repairs and/or supplies or equipment is needed.

The building Caretaker is also responsible for monitoring tenancy issues and working closely with the Housing Team to address resident concerns.

A police Information Check, Vulnerable Sector Search and Child Intervention Check are required for employment and eligibility for the live-in component of this position. The role may be well suited for an individual or couple with no pets or children. Students or retirees welcome.

What You’ll Do

  • Keep parking lot and entrances clear of garbage and cigarette butts; dispose of unwanted items, empty bins.
  • Clean common areas of the building, including dusting and disinfecting surfaces, sweeping and mopping floors, vacuuming carpets, wiping walls and windows; follow a pre-determined schedule and maintain logs of completed work.
  • Perform light maintenance and repairs, as needed – e.g.: drywall and painting, changing filters and light bulbs, mounting shelves, fixtures, etc.
  • Maintain grounds seasonally, including cutting grass, weeding, raking leaves, shoveling snow and ice removal.
  • Inform Operations Manager, and Facilities Coordinator when supplies and equipment are needed for cleaning and maintenance duties.
  • Notify Operations Manager and Director and Facilities Coordinator when major repairs and/or additions to building operating systems are required.
  • Perform daily rounds of the building:
    • Report tenancy concerns to the Operations Manager and/or Housing Team as soon as possible
  • Develop and maintain cooperative relationships with residents and neighbours; maintain appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Keep work and living spaces in clean, orderly and safe condition.
  • Conduct regular walk throughs to monitor building safety and security – lock doors after hours, note and address maintenance needs, safety issues, potential security risks.
  • Be available to accommodate at least one – 1-hour meeting per week with the team and the manager during normal working hours (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm), flexibility of virtual meeting might be provided.
  • Be flexibly available after 4:30pm, to accommodate duties.

This position description reflects the general duties of the role but is not intended to include all duties that may be inherent in the position. The Live-In Building Caretaker may be asked to perform other duties as required or assigned.

What You Bring to Our Mission

  • High School diploma / GED; provide training and certification documentation (if available).
  • Minimum valid Class 5 operator’s license, documentation to show at least 3 years of driving experience and insurance history.
  • Experienced and comfortable with cleaning, repairs, building maintenance; 1 year of custodial / janitorial experience preferred.
  • Highly motivated, able to work independently, exhibit initiative, maintain trust, responsibility, attention to detail.
  • Ability to respond to after hours emergencies.
  • Knowledge, Experience and/or education or course work related Residential Tenancy Act is highly preferred.
