Job summary

ARCH Disability Law Centre in Toronto seeks a permanent, full-time litigator dedicated to advancing social justice and disability rights. The role focuses on complex human rights applications, reviews, appellate and Charter litigation, with oversight of litigation files and mentoring law students.

You will travel across Ontario as needed, bring strong legal analysis, communication, and strategic thinking, and contribute to ARCH’s mandate in an inclusive, accessible environment.

Qualifications

  • Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario and a strong commitment to ARCH’s mandate.
  • Minimum of 10 years of demonstrated litigation experience including Charter litigation.
  • Experience in disability rights and human rights law with focus on systemic issues.

Responsibilities

  • Focus on complex human rights applications, judicial reviews, appellate, and Charter litigation.
  • Supervise litigation files and provide guidance and mentoring to ARCH law students.
  • Travel throughout Ontario as required; communicate complex legal concepts clearly.

Job description

ARCH Disability Law Centre is a specialty community legal clinic dedicated to defending and advancing the equality rights of persons with disabilities across Ontario. ARCH is funded primarily by Legal Aid Ontario. To learn more about ARCH, visit us at: www.archdisabilitylaw.ca

ARCH seeks a permanent, full-time, skilled and passionate litigator committed to advancing social justice, disability rights, and full inclusion to join our legal team. The successful candidate will be expected to fulfill all the duties of an ARCH staff lawyer, with a focus on complex human rights applications, judicial reviews, appellate, and Charter test case litigation. The lawyer will also be expected to supervise litigation files and provide guidance and mentoring to ARCH’s law students. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to ARCH’s mandate, knowledge of social justice and systemic barriers facing disability communities, and extensive experience litigating and providing legal services to persons with disabilities. Travel throughout Ontario may be required. This is an in-person position based on-site at ARCH’s offices in Toronto.

Required Qualifications
  • Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario;
  • Demonstrated commitment to ARCH’s mandate;
  • Minimum of 10 years of demonstrated litigation experience, including Charter litigation;
  • Experience in disability rights and human rights law, with a strong understanding of the legal and systemic issues affecting persons with disabilities;
  • Strong communication, legal research, analytical, and strategic thinking skills;
  • Strong professional judgment and the ability to provide strategic legal advice and direction on complex matters;
  • Ability to communicate complex legal concepts in a clear and concise way to various audiences;
  • Strong organizational, case management, and decision‑making skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully work on multiple projects and priorities within established timelines; and
  • Demonstrated leadership and experience, including guiding, mentoring, and supporting a team.
Assets
  • Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL);
  • Fluency in French;
  • Experience providing services in a community legal clinic setting;
  • Knowledge of disability organizations and community resources; and
  • Personal experience with or knowledge of disability issues and/or low‑income and culturally diverse communities.

The salary range is $107,372 - $124,990 commensurate with level of experience and year of call, along with comprehensive health and dental benefits, three weeks of vacation, and a defined benefit pension plan.
