Job description

Job Summary:
The Literacy Program Coordinator will oversee the planning, execution, and evaluation of our literacy program. This program focuses on creating and overseeing a team of volunteers to provide basic reading and writing skills to refugee children and help with homework in all subjects.

This role requires coordination between volunteers, professional educators, and refugee families to ensure the success of the program. The coordinator will also track program outcomes and secure resources to improve its effectiveness, particularly for Afghan refugees and other newly arrived populations. A key aspect of the role is managing high school volunteers who assist in delivering literacy instruction to refugee children.

Key Responsibilities:

Program Development & Implementation:
Plan and implement literacy programs designed to enhance the reading and writing skills of refugee children.
Develop age-appropriate curriculum materials in collaboration with professional educators and volunteers.
Ensure the program aligns with local school standards and prepares children for academic success.

Volunteer Coordination:
Recruit, train, manage, and match volunteers (high school students and adults) to deliver literacy instruction and homework help to refugee children.
Provide ongoing support and resources to volunteer instructors, including curriculum guidance and teaching materials.
Develop a structured volunteer schedule and ensure high school students have the necessary support for their roles.

Family & Student Engagement:
Serve as a point of contact for refugee families, ensuring they understand and can access the literacy services available.
Communicate with parents to encourage their involvement in their child’s literacy development.

Collaboration & Partnerships:
Collaborate with schools, libraries, and other local organizations to strengthen the literacy program.
Engage professional educators or literacy specialists to guide the curriculum and ensure best practices.

Program Evaluation & Reporting:
Monitor and assess the program’s impact through tracking student progress and collecting feedback from participants.
Prepare reports for donors, leadership, and grant applications as needed.

Resource Management:
Assist in securing and managing resources, including books, teaching materials, and volunteer hours.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, or a related field.
Experience in literacy education, ESL instruction, or teaching (experience with refugee or immigrant populations preferred).
Strong organizational and program management skills.
Ability to work effectively with volunteers, particularly high school students, diverse populations, and community partners.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including cross-cultural sensitivity.
Familiarity with the challenges facing refugee families in the U.S., particularly related to literacy and education.
Experience in monitoring and evaluating program outcomes.
Familiarity with using Google Drive applications (ex. Sheets, docs, calendar)
Ability to use technology for virtual communication, data tracking, and reporting.
Multilingual abilities (Arabic, Dari, Pashto) are a plus.
