This position offers case management support for residents at New Roads Therapeutic Recovery Community. Utilizing the Therapeutic Community Model, the Support Worker assists residents with programming, therapy, and daily activities, promoting community as a method.
Under the supervision of the New Roads Manager, the Support Worker will support daily activities and residents' needs at New Roads.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Attend to individual residents’ specific needs.
- Support residents in practicing the principles and values of New Roads.
- Manage cases by working with partner organizations, completing applications, and referrals (e.g., Income Assistance, PWD, BCID, BC Services Card, out-of-province ID, Unemployment Insurance, Pharmanet, Fair Pharmacare, BC Housing, banking).
- Provide ongoing one-on-one counseling for issues within the community for individuals and groups.
- Facilitate community group meetings (e.g., morning and evening).
- Resolve community issues through mediation and counseling skills (Active Listening, Motivational Interviewing, etc.).
- Collaborate closely with probation officers assigned to residents.
- Conduct UDS (Urine Drug Screen) testing and basic analysis, involving medical personnel as needed.
- Outline services and provide referral information to residents for community resources and professionals.
- Assist residents with developing independent life skills: household management, socialization, hobbies, sports, money management, decision-making, and time management.
- Attend scheduled meetings: Morning, Evening, Celebration, and House meetings.
- Complete incident reports, follow health and safety policies, and work with OPS OHS team to ensure safety. Report concerns and complete necessary paperwork.
- Participate in staff meetings and case conferences.
- Maintain reports such as statistics, logbooks, and daily resident activities.
- Undertake medication administration training and ongoing training related to medication management and opioid therapy.
- Facilitate medication changes after hours in consultation with pharmacy, doctors, or nurses.
- Provide emotional support and feedback to residents and families.
- Participate in assessments, goal setting, and program planning; document and evaluate programs.
- Model professional behavior: dress, work habits, communication, attitudes, emotional regulation, and adherence to rules.
- Monitor social and psychological environment, providing feedback and ensuring safety.
- Support the therapeutic philosophy that every activity promotes personal growth.
- Use behavioral reinforcers and extinguishers to promote community use.
- Participate in special events and celebrations.
- Complete wellness assessments.
- Assist residents with tasks and recognize behavioral or emotional changes.
- Assess situations based on individual, family, program needs, and policies.
- Drive residents to appointments and outings as needed.
- Perform other duties as required.
Skills and Abilities
- Effective verbal and written communication.
- Ability to build rapport with residents.
- Work independently and collaboratively.
- Organizational and prioritization skills.
- Valid BC driver’s license required.
Qualifications
Education and Knowledge
- Diploma in a related human/social services field.
Training and Experience
- Minimum one year of recent related experience or equivalent education/training working with individuals with substance use disorder.
- Preference for experience in recovery and knowledge of therapeutic recovery communities.
Working Conditions / Compensation
- Open only to self-identifying female applicants as approved by the BC Human Rights Commission
- Part-time shifts: Saturday/Sunday, days, 7 am to 7 pm.
- Temporary maternity leave position ending October 1, 2025.
Compensation: $31.56 to $33.49 per hour plus 5% in lieu of holidays.
Benefits: Vacation accrued at 6% or as per service, with a comprehensive benefits plan (health and dental) after probation.
This position requires union membership.
