Job summary

The City of Waterloo is hiring a Line Cook to support concession, restaurant and catering operations at our recreation facilities, ensuring consistency, efficiency, and presentation standards. This part-time casual position offers up to 24 hours per week with evening, weekend, and holiday shifts, at an hourly rate of $22.70.

Internal and external applicants are welcome, and there are three current vacancies.

Qualifications

• Completion of secondary school diploma or equivalent.
• At least 1 year of experience in a commercial food service or kitchen.
• Valid Safe Food Handling Certification is required.
• Knowledge of safe operation and maintenance of commercial kitchen equipment.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work in a team and provide quality customer service.

Responsibilities

What you will do:

• Prepare high-quality food to support concession, restaurant and catering operations at the City of Waterloo's recreation facilities, ensuring consistency, efficiency, and presentation standards.
• Follow all food safety regulations, safe food handling practices, and workplace procedures to maintain a safe environment for customers and staff.
• Produce quality menu items by following recipes, specifications, and preparation standards.
• Keep kitchen and food preparation areas clean, organized, and well-stocked to support efficient daily operations.
• Create a positive customer experience by supporting timely food service and contributing to a welcoming environment.
• Support the team by taking on other related duties as needed.

What you will bring:

• Successful completion, or currently enrolled in and actively working toward completion of a secondary school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum one (1) year of experience in a commercial food service or kitchen environment.
• Valid Safe Food Handling Certification is required.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the safe operation, cleaning, and maintenance of commercial kitchen equipment.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact professionally and effectively with Food Services team members, City staff, and the general public.
• Strong verbal communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships with colleagues and customers.
• A passion for promoting and maintaining a healthy and safe workplace and the ability to work respectfully and effectively in a team environment.
• Strong commitment to delivering quality customer service.
• Demonstrated commitment to Reconciliation, Equity, Accessibility, Diversity and Inclusion.

Hours of work:

• Up to 24 hours per week, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Scheduled hours are based on operational requirements and may vary throughout the year. Food Services operates seven days a week, with shifts scheduled between 6:00 a.m. and 1:00 a.m. Seasonal fluctuations in operating hours may occur, and candidates must be available to work a flexible schedule to meet business needs.

• Please note, hours of work may be outside of public transportation operation hours.

What we will require:

• A Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check satisfactory to the City.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Proof of your current and valid certificate(s), licenses and/or educational qualification, if applicable.
