Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Education, Alberta teaching certificate preferred.
• 1-2 years ESL/EAL teaching experience, or TESL certification.
• Proficiency in English with strong intercultural communication.
• Experience with online teaching platforms and PBLA is an asset.
• Strong computer skills and familiarity with MS 365 applications.

Responsibilities

• Adhere to ECSD LINC policies and procedures.
• Instruct LINC classes with focus on settlement and inclusion.
• Develop lesson plans and teaching materials per guidelines.
• Utilize online learning platforms and PBLA as needed.
• Record daily attendance and share notes with regular instructor.
• Organize field trips using TBLT; ensure a safe learning environment.
• Participate in substitute training and maintain classroom tidiness.

PRIMARY FOCUS/OVERALL ACCOUNTABILITY:

Provide basic English language instruction to adult newcomers to facilitate the social, cultural, and economic integration of immigrants and refugees into Canada.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACTIVITIES

• 1. Adhere to all ECSD LINC policies and procedures;
• 2. Practice cultural awareness, sensitivity and respect in the workplace;
• 3. Adhere to Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP) with respect to students’ and employee's personal information;
• 4. Establish a welcoming, safe and positive learning atmosphere for students;
• 5. Ensure that you are informed of the Crisis Management plan for the LINC site;
• 6. Instruct to the lesson plan, when provided;
• 7. Instruct all LINC class/level s emphasizing settlement issues and multicultural inclusion;
• 8. Instruct and assist students in language learning including digital literacy by following the ECSD LINC Curriculum Guidelines and Digital Literacy Progression List;
• 9. Be prepared to utilize online learning platforms/programs in the classroom as needed;
• 10. Create lesson plans and teaching materials following the ECSD LINC Curriculum Guidelines , and a Task-Based Language Teaching approach (TBLT), citing copyright when referring to or using other resources ;
• 11. Keep current with developments in the ESL teaching profession including literacy (if applicable) and Portfolio Based Language Asse ss ment (PBLA) ;
• 12. Record daily student attendance;
• 13. Work amicably as a team member : sharing workspaces , participating in and contributing to materials exchange, staff meet i ngs and professional development;
• 14. Provide ample notes to regular instructor upon their return regarding instruction that occurred and any other significant events;
• 15. Ensure classrooms are clean and tidy at the end of each working shift;
• 16. Perform other duties as assigned by the Site Coordinator;
• 17. Create lesson plans/modules/assessments/teaching materials, if needed, in consultation with the PBLA Lead and following the ECSD LINC Curriculum Guidelines , and a Task-Based Language Teaching approach (TBLT), citing copyright when referring to or using other resources ;
• 18. Condu c t assessments, provided by regular instructor, according to the Canadian Language Benchmarks and Portfolio Based Language Assessments (PBLA); record and share student achievement with the regular instructor;
• 19. Organize and participate in field trips that utilize TBLT; and,
• 20. Participate in Substitute training session s when provided.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree in Education, Alberta teaching certificate is preferred;
• Related bachelor’s degree, and
• 1-2 years of relevant ESL/EAL teaching experience, or
• TESL Canada certification, or
• Completion of the ACE TESOL Certificate
• Language Proficiency Requirements, if required:
• TOEFL iBT – 92 or more with a minimum of 22 in each skill;
• IELTS General or Academic –7.0 overall score with a minimum of 6.5 in each skill; or,
• CELPIP General – 10 in each skill
• Completion of online CLB Bootcamp Training prior to hire - http://learning.language.ca;
• Bow Valley College Post TESL Certificate would be considered an asset;
• Online teaching experience would be considered an asset;
• Strong computer skills and knowledge incorporating technology into the ESL classroom;
• Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications and applicable online platforms ;
• Experience working with adult ESL learners at various levels;
• Demonstrated capability in developing curricula;
• Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills; and,
• Ability to work independently with solid time management and organizational skills.

This is an as-needed substitute position running from October 5, 2026, through March 31, 2027. Hours and shifts will vary depending on staffing needs and employee absences. The position is available at LINC St. Basil and LINC St. Francis of Assisi and reports to the Program Manager.

Hourly Salary: $38.67/hour
