Trent University invites applications for a one-year (12 months) limited term faculty position in Philosophy in the Department of Philosophy at the rank of Assistant Professor to start August 15, 2025. The Department of Philosophy is seeking an outstanding early career scholar with areas of specialization in Ethical Theory and Biomedical Ethics. This position is located at Trent’s Peterborough Campus and is subject to budgetary approval.

Trent University is the top-ranked primarily undergraduate university in Ontario, Canada with a reputation for excellence in teaching and research. The Department of Philosophy offers research informed, pedagogically innovative and community engaged undergraduate programs in Trent’s faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Candidates must have a Ph.D. (or be close to completion by the date of appointment) in Philosophy. This is a teaching-intensive position, and responsibilities will include contributing to course delivery and curriculum development in the Department of Philosophy, as well as developing a high-quality research program and providing service to the Department. The successful candidate should have a demonstrated capacity for excellence in undergraduate teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to teach seven (7) courses and would include the following courses (this list is subject to change):

Fall 2025

  • PHIL 1100H: Introduction to Philosophy—Moral and Political
  • PHIL 2390H-WEB: Biomedical Ethics
  • PHIL 3110H: Ethical Theory

Winter 2026

  • PHIL 1100H: Introduction to Philosophy—Moral and Political
  • PHIL 2390H-WEB: Biomedical Ethics
  • PHIL 4390H: Advanced Topics in Biomedical Ethics

Summer 2026

  • PHIL 2390H-WEB: Biomedical Ethics
