The Opportunity:

WSP’s Building/Transportation M&E Team is seeking a Lighting Designer with a passion for design to join our Lighting Team in Toronto (25 York St.). Reporting to Lighting Manager within the Mechanical & Electrical group; the successful candidate will be a team player with the ability to receive and execute instructions with minimal supervision from senior designers or discipline lead to play a key role in delivering cutting-edge Lighting Design projects for a range of industry clients including Transportation, Healthcare, Commercial, Educational, Entertainment & Recreation, Government & Cultural Buildings.
The applicant should be a knowledgeable designer, a quick learner, creative, detail-oriented, and organized with a passion for design.

What you can expect to do here:

  • Produce creative lighting concepts from proposal to detail design stage, including plans and design details, prepare specifications and schedules, build mock-ups, prepare sketch design proposals and liaise with architects, interior designers, and equipment suppliers;
  • Help enhance and fulfill the vision of the project;
  • Perform lighting calculations;
  • Maintain a high level of knowledge on current technology;
  • Provide input on company design standards and specifications to improve quality;
  • Design systems within the fee and construction budget;
  • Set up and maintain design files;
  • Review and supervise drafting;
  • Prepare and review markups;

What you’ll bring to WSP:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Interior Design, Lighting Design, or Architectural Engineering;
  • 5-7 years of experience in interior and exterior lighting design, with several successfully completed projects across a range of sectors;
  • High level of experience in AGI32, AutoCAD and Revit 3D modeling;
  • Mentoring experience is essential for this position;
  • Proficiency in 3d modelling programs (SketchUp, or similar software) is an asset;
  • Advanced project coordination and project management skills ;
  • Ability to read Architectural, Structural, and Electrical drawings;
  • A good understanding of Building Codes and Standards, including but not limited to Ontario Building Code (OBC), IESNA, ASHRAE, NFPA, etc.;
  • Capability to apply prescriptive code, bylaws, specifications, and requirements;
  • Excellent presentation, verbal, and written communication skills;
  • Excels in a fast-paced environment;
  • Strong aptitude to work on multiple projects and manage workload to meet project deadlines;
  • Thrives working individually and within team environments;
  • Able to “sketch” ideas;
  • Understanding lighting control systems is an asset.
