Magnolia Gardens, in Langley, is part of the Bria Communities family, a private, locally-owned group of retirement living residences in Langley and Tsawwassen. Reporting to the Recreation Coordinator (Care Centre), the Recreation Assistant is responsible for assisting in the implementation of activity programs that meet the physical, social, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, and cultural needs and interests of residents in accordance with established goals and policies.

Key Accountabilities
  1. Organizes and directs indoor and outdoor daily activity programs including exercise classes, entertainment, crafts, and related activities to encourage involvement and independence.
  2. Assists in setting objectives and standards to measure the success of the programs, ensuring required standards are met.
  3. Assists in developing and producing monthly calendars and informational materials for residents.
  4. Adheres to management policies on purchasing, ordering, stock, and inventory control.
  5. Promotes resident participation in social, spiritual, and recreational activities, encouraging involvement from resident families and the community.
  6. Assists with training volunteers as required.
  7. Drives the bus for community outings, ensuring pre- and post-inspection of the vehicle.
  8. Observes and reports any changes in residents' functional and cognitive behavior to the Recreation Coordinator.
  9. Maintains residents' rights to privacy and confidentiality, following proper procedures.
  10. Follows security procedures in handling and storing confidential materials.
  11. Attends conferences and seminars for professional development.
  12. Ensures departmental compliance with Health and Safety Standards and Regulations.
  13. Maintains current knowledge of policies and procedures and complies with them.
Education & Experience
  • Diploma in a recreation program or equivalent qualifications in the Continuing Care field.
  • Current basic First Aid Certificate.
  • Proficiency with Google Docs and Google Sheets.
  • Class 4 Drivers License, or willingness to obtain (company paid).
  • Minimum one year experience in a recreational setting.
  • Experience driving a bus is an asset.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Respect for and ability to maintain the dignity, individuality, and spirit of residents and staff.
  • Strong communication skills in English, both written and oral.
  • Ability to operate all related equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Effective organizational and evaluation skills for activity programs.
  • Ability to teach and engage residents in activities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, tact, courtesy, and patience.
  • Creativity and ability to stimulate resident interest and participation.
  • Physical capability for lifting, bending, stooping, and stretching.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, including shifts during days, evenings, and Saturdays.
