Job description

Your Opportunity:

The 3F4 Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Float Pool position provides nursing care to nine 18+ bed units, including Orthopedics, General Surgery, Plastic/Reconstructive, Urology, ENT/Otolaryngology, and Trauma. Patients are received from the operating room, emergency department, intensive care unit, and directly from home and/or surgery clinics. Decisions are made in a collaborative multidisciplinary team environment.

As an LPN, you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities, and populations, ensuring their safety and well-being. You will utilize nursing processes, critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making, as well as teach, counsel, and advocate on behalf of patients and families. The LPN provides safe and effective nursing care according to hospital policies and nursing care standards. Working within the full scope of practice, the LPN observes, monitors, reports, and documents changes in patients' physical, mental, and emotional states, assists with activities of daily living, and provides relevant information and teaching to patients and families. The LPN collaborates as a member of the healthcare team to deliver consistent quality care tailored to patient needs.

As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you will be part of an interprofessional healthcare team utilizing nursing processes, critical thinking, problem solving, and decision-making skills. You will be guided by your education, experience, demonstrated skills, and AHS policies and procedures. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality, patient- and family-centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Successful candidates are expected to pass the medication calculation exam (80% score) provided by the surgery program within 14 days of orientation. The exam is available during orientation or scheduled by the CNE, with three attempts allowed within the two-week period. Current adult surgical nursing experience as an LPN within the last three years, with a minimum of one year, is required. Phase 2 LPN certifications, including parenteral nutrition, central lines, and blood administration, are preferred. Candidates should demonstrate excellent assessment, documentation, clinical, organizational, and patient care skills. Ability to handle stressful situations, prioritize complex patient care needs, and cope with frequent interruptions. Connect Care training is required. The ability to lift 25-50 pounds and no current activity restrictions (e.g., pulling, pushing, reaching, bending) are necessary. Rotation schedules are subject to change.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to applicants with current adult general surgery experience. Skills in IV therapy, pre-op/post-op care protocols, central line/PICC care, ostomy care, surgical wound/drain care, negative pressure wound therapy (VAC dressings), NG tube insertion, and management are highly desirable. Strong patient teaching skills are also preferred.
