A prominent healthcare provider in Edmonton seeks a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to deliver comprehensive patient care in a surgical unit. The LPN will be responsible for assessment, collaboration in multidisciplinary teams, and ensuring patient safety. Candidates must have completed an accredited program and possess current BCLS certification. Experience in adult surgical nursing within the past 5 years is required. This full-time position offers a salary range from $27.58 to $36.13 per hour.

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of comprehensive patient and family centered care on an acute surgical unit in accordance with the UAH and AHS policy and procedures. 3D4 is an 18+ bed unit providing care to General Surgery patients received from the operating room, emergency department, intensive care unit and directly from home and/or surgery clinics. Decisions are made in a collaborative multidisciplinary team environment. As a LPN, you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and families. The LPN provides safe and effective nursing care according to hospital policies and nursing care standards. Working within the full scope of practice, the LPN observes, monitors, reports, and documents changes in the patients physical, mental, and emotional state, assists the patient with activities of daily living and provides the patient and family with relevant information and teaching. The LPN is responsible to collaborate as a member of the health care team, delivering consistent quality care, to meet the needs of the patient.
As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you are part of an interprofessional health care team utilizing nursing processes, critical thinking, problem solving and decision making skills. You will be guided by your education, experience, demonstrated skill level and AHS policies and procedures. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.
Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Successful candidate is expected to pass the medication calculation exam (80% score) provided by the surgery program within 14 days of orientation. Medication Calculation exams is provided during the surgery orientation days or scheduled by the CNE. The candidate has 3 attempts to pass the exam within the 2-week orientation period. Current adult surgical nursing experience within the last 5 years is required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Demonstrated excellent assessment, documentation, clinical, organizational and patient care skills. Proficient at medication administration calculations. Ability to deal with stressful situations, prioritize complex patient care needs and demands, prioritize workload assignment and cope with frequent interruptions. Ability to lift 25-50 pounds, must not have current activity restrictions, such as pulling, pushing, reaching and bending.
Current IV therapy, Pre-op/Post-op care protocols, Central line/PICC care, Ostomy care, basic surgical wound/drain care, complex wound care and negative pressure wounds (VAC dressing), NG tube insertion and management. Strong patient teaching skills. Note: Rotation subject to change. Preference will be given to applicants with Adult General Surgery experience.
