Licensed Practical Nurse

BC Mental Health & Substance Use Services
Location: Maple Ridge, BC

Correctional Health Services (CHS) is a province-wide, specialized program providing care for clients who are incarcerated in one of BC's 10 provincial correctional facilities. What you'll do
  1. Establish therapeutic relationships with clients. Assess and identify client's actual and potential strengths and limitations including physiological, psychological, social-cultural and spiritual needs. Provide emotional support as needed.
  2. Contribute to the development and modification of individualized care plans by identifying client priorities/plans and suggesting revisions of the nursing care plan as required for stable clients.
  3. Perform a variety of nursing procedures such as taking blood pressures, heights and weights, and urine testing as directed; and communicate patient information to in-charge nurses (RN/RPN), physicians, and other appropriate members of the team.
  4. Monitor status of clients in relation to anticipated outcomes. Evaluate the effectiveness of nursing interventions by comparing actual outcomes to anticipated outcomes. Report unanticipated changes and concerns to the nurse-in-charge.
  5. Maintain complete and accurate computerized and paper records through methods such as tracking results/consults documentation, and inputting data and documentation in accordance with established procedures and policies appropriately on the client's health record.
  6. Review the medication administration record for each client and check with the nurse-in-charge or the physician regarding any concerns.

What you bring
Qualifications
  1. Graduation from a recognized program for Practical Nurses plus 1 year of experience working with offenders and/or in secure health care settings, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  2. Current full practicing licensure with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).
  3. Occupational First Aid Level 2 certification (OFA Level 3 certification for positions at the Ford Mountain Correctional Centre).
  4. Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the historic and ongoing impacts of settler colonialism and systemic racism on Indigenous Peoples within social and health contexts.
  5. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments within BC Mental Health & Substance Use Services contexts.

Core Competencies
  1. Understanding of Indigenous specific racism and broader systemic racism in the colonial health care structure.
  2. Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples.
