Job description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a shared responsibility; therefore, continuous improvement in quality and safety is inherent in this position.

Under the direction of the Manager or designate and as part of a multidisciplinary team, the Licensed Practical Nurse, Full Scope, performs assessments, plans and provides personal care, and carries out nursing procedures. The LPN operates within the full scope of practice as outlined by the BC College of Nurses and Midwives, adhering to agency policies, standards, and unit-specific protocols.

Qualifications: Education, Training, and Experience
  • Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing LPN.
  • Perinatal positions require either (a) completion of a perinatal education program plus breastfeeding course, or (b) one year of recent (within the last 2 years) acute perinatal experience. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification within the past 2 years is also required.
  • MHSU positions require additional education as specified by BCCNM for practice involving Mental Health and/or Substance Use disorders.
  • Hip and Knee Clinic positions require two years of recent, related surgical and preadmission clinic experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Skills and Abilities
  • Effective verbal and written communication with residents, families, co-workers, multidisciplinary team members, and the public.
  • Ability to deal effectively with others.
  • Organize work and implement care plans.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and competencies to work at full scope of practice, including medication administration.
  • Operate related equipment.
  • Physically perform duties required by the position.
