Job description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. Continuous improvement of quality and safety is inherent in this position.

Under the direction of the Manager or designate and in collaboration as a member of a multidisciplinary team, the Licensed Practical Nurse, Full Scope, performs assessments, plans and provides personal care, and performs nursing procedures. The LPN operates within the competency guidelines and full scope of practice outlined by the BC College of Nurses and Midwives, as well as agency policies, standards, and unit-specific protocols.

QUALIFICATIONS: Education, Training, and Experience
  • Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing LPN.
  • Perinatal positions require either (a) completion of a perinatal education program plus a breastfeeding course; or (b) one year of recent (within the last 2 years) acute perinatal experience. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification within the past 2 years is also required.
  • MHSU positions require additional education as outlined by BCCNM for practice involving Mental Health and/or Substance Use disorders.
  • Hip and Knee Clinic positions require two years of recent, related surgical and preadmission clinic experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Skills and Abilities
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with residents, families, co-workers, multidisciplinary team members, and the public.
  • Deal effectively with others.
  • Organize work and implement a plan of care.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and competencies to work at full scope of practice, including administering medications.
  • Operate related equipment.
  • Physically carry out the duties of the position.
