Job Description: Licensed Practical Nurse, Full Scope

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. Continuous improvement in quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Under the direction of the Manager or designate and in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team, the Licensed Practical Nurse, Full Scope, performs assessments, plans, and provides personal care, and executes nursing procedures. The nurse operates within the full scope of practice outlined by the BC College of Nurses and Midwives, adhering to competency guidelines, agency policies, standards, and unit-specific protocols.

Qualifications: Education, Training, and Experience
  • Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing LPN registrant.
  • Perinatal positions require either: (a) completion of a perinatal education program plus breastfeeding course; or (b) one year of recent (within the last 2 years) acute perinatal experience. Additionally, Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification must be current within the past 2 years.
  • MHSU positions require additional education as outlined by BCCNM for practice involving Mental Health and/or Substance Use disorders.
Skills and Abilities
  • Effective verbal and written communication with residents, families, co-workers, the multidisciplinary team, and the public.
  • Ability to deal effectively with others.
  • Organization of work and implementation of a care plan.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and competencies to work at full scope of practice, including medication administration.
  • Operation of related equipment.
  • Physical ability to perform duties of the position.
