LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSE

The Grande Prairie Public School Division is seeking a Licensed Practical Nurse to provide specialized medical care and educational assistance in a classroom setting. Candidate should have a strong understanding of tracheostomy acuity and be competent/confident in working with the same. Working as part of a team, this position supports the classroom teacher and multi-disciplinary team in providing an inclusive learning environment by supporting both medical and educational needs of students.

Responsibilities Include

Assess, plan, deliver and evaluate nursing care for a medically fragile individual. Training will be provided to ensure all members of the team (LPN, Teacher, Educational Assistants, etc.) are aware of the student’s medical care requirements. This care includes but is not limited to:

  • Assessment- the ability to assess tracheostomy stoma, respirations, and work of breathing. Must have the ability to recognize respiratory distress and the development of same.
  • Suctioning- the ability to recognize when trach suctioning is required. Candidate will have the ability and knowledge to suction tracheostomy using sterile technique. Knowledge on how to handle changing trach secretions is necessary.
  • Emergency Response- candidate will have the ability to identify and respond to an emergency with a tracheostomy.
  • Candidate will have BLS (healthcare) CPR and be knowledgeable on adapting same for CPR with a tracheostomy.
  • Assist classroom students in following educational programs, strategies, exercises, and materials identified/developed and introduced by the classroom teacher.
  • Assist the teacher in the preparation of instructional material to support the needs of specific students. Provide feedback to the teacher on their observations of students.

Desirable Assets Include

  • Familiar with the developmental, educational, emotional, social and recreational needs of children, youth and families.
  • Experience working with school aged children.
  • Training with communication devices.

  • Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA)
  • Current Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Check and Child Intervention Record Check
