Job summary

Calgarydropin is seeking a Licensed Practical Nurse to join our Urban Response team in Calgary, Alberta. This full-time night role (7 PM – 7 AM, 4 on/4 off) provides compassionate nursing care in a clinic setting, focusing on wound care, immunizations, harm reduction, and health education for guests facing barriers to care.

You will bring an accredited two-year Practical Nursing diploma, CLPNA registration, CPR-BLS, and trauma-informed care knowledge, with strong clinical judgment and time

Qualifications

• Completion of accredited two-year Practical Nursing diploma.
• Registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) in good standing.
• Current CPR – BLS certification.
• Working understanding of Trauma Informed Care.
• Knowledge of addiction, homelessness, mental health epidemiology; willingness to stay updated.

Responsibilities

• Deliver compassionate nursing care within scope of practice with clinical judgment.
• Provide immunizations and treatments; support clinics and harm-reduction services.
• Educate clients on disease prevention, sexual health, nutrition, and wellness topics.
• Perform phlebotomy and basic lab services with safety and respect.
• Provide trauma-informed care and support for diverse client backgrounds.
• Assess client needs and develop personalized health strategies with follow-up.

The Opportunity

Position Title: Licensed Practical Nurse
Reports To: Health & Recovery Services Leadership
Employment Type: Full-Time (1.05FTE)
Schedule: 7PM - 7AM, 4 on/4 off
Location: 1 Dermot Baldwin Way SE, Calgary, Alberta

About the Department

Urban Response is made up of two core programs: the Episodic Medical Care Clinic (EMCC or the Clinic) and Rapid Response Team (RRT). Together, these services provide timely, accessible, and person-centered healthcare to guests facing barriers to mainstream health services.

EMCC is a nurse-led clinic that offers a wide range of episodic health services, including wound care, Sexually Transmitted and Blood-Borne Infections (STBBI) testing and treatment, medication support, phlebotomy, assessments, mental health supports, health education and system navigation.

RRT is staffed by nurses and paramedics who respond to medical emergencies in the Emergency Shelter – emergencies most commonly being drug poisonings. The RRT team provides on-site assessment and intervention, monitoring guests until they either stabilize or require transfer to acute care.

• Champion community wellness by delivering client-centered immunizations and treatments, supporting specialized clinics, and ensuring every individual receives care with dignity, compassion, and respect.
• Support individuals on their health and recovery journey by delivering accessible, client-centered education on disease prevention, sexual health, harm reduction, nutrition, personal care, and other essential wellness topics.
• Deliver exceptional client-centered care by applying expertise in phlebotomy and lab services, ensuring clients receive safe, efficient, and respectful support.
• Empower individuals from all backgrounds through trauma-informed care that celebrates diversity, acknowledges systemic barriers, and helps clients access the support, resources, and opportunities they need to thrive.
• Partner with clients on their journey to better health by assessing individual needs, developing personalized health strategies, and delivering proactive support, education, and follow-up that empowers clients to improve their health, and achieve their goals.

What we need from you

• Completion of an accredited two-year Practical Nursing diploma. Proof of completion required.
• Registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA). Proof of registration, in good standing with no restrictions or conditions, required.
• Valid Professional Liability Insurance. Proof of coverage required.
• Current CPR – BLS. Proof of certification required.
• Have at minimum a working understanding of Trauma Informed Care.
• Strong knowledge and understanding of the epidemiology of addiction, homelessness, mental health and acute medical concerns, and able to maintain active learning on emerging evidence and best practices.
• Resourcefulness and knowledge of community resources and social support systems.
• Energetic and self-directed, with effective time management and organizational skills including the ability to deal with several priorities at the same time.
• Well-developed interpersonal, conflict resolution and negotiating skills.
• Ability to provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check
• A genuine commitment to the mission, vision, values, and work of the agency.

Nice to Have’s

• 1-2 years nursing experience is an asset, preferably within the addictions and mental health field, and/or the homeless servicing system of care.
• Lived experience an asset but not a requirement. We ask that those with lived experience are two or more years in their recovery, less may be considered if ALL other aspects are met.
• Experience in acute care, Advance Wound Care certification, and/or mental health experience are all considered assets but not mandatory.
