Job summary

The Calgary Drop-In Centre (the DI) is seeking a Licensed Practical Nurse to join Urban Response teams in Calgary, delivering client-centered nursing care, immunizations, wound care, and health education within a trauma-informed framework.

This full-time contract requires CLPNA registration, a two-year Practical Nursing diploma, and CPR-BLS certification. The DI offers comprehensive benefits, professional development, and a collaborative working environment focused on dignity and recovery.

Qualifications

• Completion of an accredited two-year Practical Nursing diploma.
• Registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA). In good standing with no restrictions or conditions.
• Valid Professional Liability Insurance.
• Current CPR – BLS certification.
• Have at minimum a working understanding of Trauma Informed Care.
• Strong knowledge of epidemiology of addiction, homelessness, mental health and acute medical concerns; committed to ongoing learning.
• Excellent time management and organizational skills; ability to juggle priorities.

Responsibilities

• Deliver compassionate nursing care within scope of practice using clinical judgment and initiative.
• Champion client-centered immunizations and treatments and support clinics.
• Provide client education on disease prevention, sexual health, harm reduction, nutrition, and personal care.

The Opportunity

Schedule: 7AM - 7PM, 4 on/4 off
Location: 1 Dermot Baldwin Way SE, Calgary, Alberta

About the Department

Urban Response is made up of two core programs: the Episodic Medical Care Clinic (EMCC or the Clinic) and Rapid Response Team (RRT). Together, these services provide timely, accessible, and person-centered healthcare to guests facing barriers to mainstream health services.

EMCC is a nurse-led clinic that offers a wide range of episodic health services, including wound care, Sexually Transmitted and Blood-Borne Infections (STBBI) testing and treatment, medication support, phlebotomy, assessments, mental health supports, health education and system navigation.

RRT is staffed by nurses and paramedics who respond to medical emergencies in the Emergency Shelter – emergencies most commonly being drug poisonings. The RRT team provides on-site assessment and intervention, monitoring guests until they either stabilize or require transfer to acute care.

• Make a meaningful difference in clients' lives by independently delivering compassionate, high-quality nursing care within your scope of practice, using strong clinical judgment, critical thinking, and initiative to support health, recovery, and overall well-being.
• Champion community wellness by delivering client-centered immunizations and treatments, supporting specialized clinics, and ensuring every individual receives care with dignity, compassion, and respect.
• Support individuals on their health and recovery journey by delivering accessible, client-centered education on disease prevention, sexual health, harm reduction, nutrition, personal care, and other essential wellness topics.
• Deliver exceptional client-centered care by applying expertise in phlebotomy and lab services, ensuring clients receive safe, efficient, and respectful support.
• Empower individuals from all backgrounds through trauma-informed care that celebrates diversity, acknowledges systemic barriers, and helps clients access the support, resources, and opportunities they need to thrive.
• Partner with clients on their journey to better health by assessing individual needs, developing personalized health strategies, and delivering proactive support, education, and follow-up that empowers clients to improve their health, and achieve their goals.

What we need from you

• Resourcefulness and knowledge of community resources and social support systems.
• Energetic and self-directed, with effective time management and organizational skills including the ability to deal with several priorities at the same time.
• Well-developed interpersonal, conflict resolution and negotiating skills.
• Ability to provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check
• A genuine commitment to the mission, vision, values, and work of the agency.

Nice to Have’s

• 1-2 years nursing experience is an asset, preferably within the addictions and mental health field, and/or the homeless servicing system of care.
• Lived experience an asset but not a requirement. We ask that those with lived experience are two or more years in their recovery, less may be considered if ALL other aspects are met.
• Experience in acute care, Advance Wound Care certification, and/or mental health experience are all considered assets but not mandatory.
