PRIMARY FUNCTION

The assistant is a skilled, technical worker who performs physical therapy treatments and related duties as assigned by the therapist.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Graduation from an accredited school for Physical Therapist Assistants.
Therapy Experience, Other:
  • No experience required but desired.

COVID vaccination is preferred but an exemption will be considered.

License:

Licensure by the Alabama Board of Physical Therapy, verifiable at pt.alabama.gov.

Source of Supervision:

Staff Physical Therapist/Clinical Director

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Stands, turns, bends, stoops, lifts, climbs, and uses significant physical motion daily. Must be able to stand for extended periods and walk extensively without fatigue. Capable of lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs. unaided, or more with assistance or mechanical aids. Operation of electrical equipment required.

Interpersonal Relationships:
  1. Supervises Rehab Technicians.
  2. Treats patients after evaluation by a Registered Physical Therapist.
  3. Participates in in-service training for staff.
  4. Consults with the physical therapist on patient progress and care plans.
  5. Collaborates with other departments involved in patient care.
Responsibilities:
  1. Adheres to the APTA code of ethics.
  2. Reports to the Staff Physical Therapist/Clinical Director regarding physical therapy matters.
  3. Performs PT procedures per the Plan of Care.
  4. Provides home treatment instructions in consultation with the PT.
  5. Maintains equipment and supplies beneficial to patients.
  6. Maintains a positive, encouraging attitude without false hope.
  7. Counsels patients and families on specific issues with PT supervision.
  8. Supports the patient's physical, emotional, and social recovery.
  9. Uses appropriate, cost-effective procedures and resources.
  10. Documents incidents or accidents in writing as they occur.
  11. Records all treatments according to department policies.
