Job summary

West Shore Parks & Recreation in Victoria, BC, is seeking caring Afterschool Care Inclusion Leaders to integrate children with additional support needs into the program. You will facilitate participation, adapt activities, and support the development of self-confidence while maintaining strong relationships with families and staff.

The role offers competitive wages, access to counselling, and a staff facility pass for weightroom, pool, skating, and golf.

Qualifications

  • Must be minimum 19 years of age.
  • Experience working with children with disabilities or additional support needs.
  • Minimum of 180 hours of experience working with school age children (5-12) with disabilities and behaviour problems.
  • 20 hours of proof of workshops/training courses.
  • Current Emergency First Aid and CPR/C certification.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate participation and adapt activities as required for a child requiring one-on-one support.
  • Encourage independence where appropriate and assist in developing child’s self-confidence.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with parents, children, colleagues, and staff from the Queen Alexandra Foundation.
  • Complete any necessary written documentation of the child’s progress as part of their designated care plan.
  • Assist instructor with developing and coordinating the weekly program schedule to promote social experiences.
  • Promote and deliver safe, healthy, positive interactions, communications, diversity, and learning opportunities.
  • Promote and enhance creative ideas in all program areas such as arts & crafts, dramatic play, music appreciation, science and nature, and sports.

SALARY: $22.83 per hour + 14% in lieu of benefits = $26.02 per hour!

CLASSIFICATION: JB05, Program Instructor III

HOURS OF WORK: Schedule varies Monday to Friday, from an approximate 2:00PM to 3:00PM start time, to a 5:30PM end time throughout the school year (September to June). Hours are based on registration and operational needs. Shifts may include occasional full days on Pro-D Days, Winter Break Camp, and Spring Break Camp. Opportunities to pick up shifts for sick or other last-minute coverage may also become available.

Position Overview

We're looking for caring and supportive individuals join our Afterschool Care team. As an Afterschool Care Inclusion Leader, you will be responsible for facilitating and integrating a child or children with additional physical, behavioral, or developmental support requirements into the afterschool care program.

In addition to great wages, employees receive access to counselling, and a staff facility pass which provides drop-in use of the weightroom, fitness classes, skating, the pool and our 9-hole golf course.

  • As a licensed care program, candidates must be a minimum of 19 years of age.
  • Experience working with children with disabilities or additional support needs as required.
  • Minimum of 180 hours of experience working with school age children (aged 5-12 yrs) with disabilities and behaviour problems is required.
  • 20 hours of proof of workshops/training courses.
  • Current Emergency First Aid and CPR/C certification is required.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work as an effective team member.
  • Class 4* unrestricted driver’s license is an asset.

West Shore Parks & Recreation operates 7 days a week, and employees may be required to work days, weekends, evenings and statutory holidays to meet operational requirements. West Shore Parks & Recreation Society (WSPRS) is pleased to offer a comprehensive benefit package for Regular full-time and part-time employees, and 14% in lieu of benefits coverage for Auxiliary employees. All employees are offered a complimentary pass to our facility for drop in use of the weightroom, pool, skating rink and some drop-in fitness classes. Limited use of the golf course is also included with the facility pass.
