The Parkland School Division has a Permanent Part-time (0.429 FTE) Library Technician II position available at Ecole Meridian Heights School in Stony Plain, Alberta. As this position is less than 20 hours/week, it is not benefit-eligible.

The successful candidate will work with staff to promote a love of reading, enhance communication skills, resource the library with books and learning materials, maintain the library space, and collaborate with staff to facilitate cross-curricular learning in single and multi-age settings. Main duties include shelving books, maintaining the catalog, purchasing and organizing new books, and organizing and cataloging teacher resources.

Function and Purpose of Position

A Library Technician II will oversee the daily operations of the library. You will work with the school community, including staff and students, to support diverse learning in a welcoming, cross-curricular environment. As part of a collaborative team and capable of working independently, you will contribute to creating a vibrant learning commons for all.

Library Technician II’s may :

  • Work under the direction of the Principal and/or designate.
  • Work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Enjoy working with students and staff.

Learning Commons Resources and Instructional Support

  • Manage literature including circulation, ordering, and collection of materials and resources.
  • Understand the Alberta Education Learning Commons Policy and Guidelines.
  • Create a positive environment that excites students.
  • Support an inclusive, forward-thinking learning environment.
  • Network with others beyond the school setting.
  • Be familiar with Maker Space and other innovative library practices.
  • Support instruction, research, literacy, and learning in digital/technology-based and print-rich environments.
  • Classify and catalog new materials by assigning numbers, levels, and subjects.
  • Prepare materials and resources for activities planned or collaborated on with classroom teachers.

Behavior

  • Maintain a safe and secure environment for students and staff using de-escalation strategies and nonviolent crisis intervention techniques.
  • Encourage and maintain appropriate behavior within the school.

Student Assistance and Personal Care

  • Provide support, assistance, and supervision to students in a school setting.

Communication and Reporting

  • Build relationships with students and staff.
  • Use technology to record evidence of learning for sharing with stakeholders.
  • Communicate with the Principal or designate about programming progress and maintain records of learning activities and resources.

Supervise Students

  • Assist students using the space and resources.
  • Supervision as directed by the Principal or designate.
  • Supervise small groups during field trips, in the learning commons, and other learning spaces.

Student Personal Development

  • Provide advice, assistance, and guidance to build student skills and knowledge.
  • Tutor, mentor, and coach students in the school setting.

Other Duties

  • Perform other assigned duties as required.

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma.
  • Information and Library Technology Diploma or equivalent is an asset.
  • 3 to 5 years of related experience.
  • Experience working with children in a school environment is an asset.
  • Experience with Destiny, Discovery Education, Google Apps, and technology hardware is an asset.
  • Experience supporting youth programming incorporating technology, art, and literacy.

Equivalencies will be considered.

Decision Making

Library Technicians make decisions, with appropriate approval, based on the needs of the school community relating to the Learning Commons. It is essential to keep the library organized and resources accessible.

Working with Others

Contacts include:

  • Employees within the same school.
  • Employees in other schools.
  • Students, requiring explanation and interpretation of information.
  • Observations regarding student health and behavior, communicated to teachers.

Work is performed independently with minimal supervision. Specific instructions are provided during work processes.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift items weighing up to 50 lbs, sometimes heavier.
  • Work in a fast-paced, noisy environment with interruptions.
  • Stand, bend, sit, and reach as needed.
  • Assist students, staff, and the public.

Working Conditions

Indoors, except when supervising outdoors or on field trips. The position follows a ten-month contract schedule, with work hours to be determined. Use of a personal vehicle may be required.
