The Parkland School Division has a Temporary Part-Time (0.893 FTE) Library Technician I position available at Graminia School in Spruce Grove, Alberta. The successful candidate will handle circulation, ordering, and cataloging of materials, facilitate student use of the library, inventory materials, and supervise students as needed.

The role involves managing literature, including circulation, ordering, and maintaining a collection of materials and resources. Candidates should understand the Alberta Education document, Learning Commons Policy and Guidelines, and be capable of developing and overseeing a budget for the Learning Commons. They should also foster a positive, engaging environment that inspires students.

Existing Employees: As an existing CUPE employee, you are eligible to apply and, if successful, will maintain your permanent status. After the temporary position, you will be returned to a similar or the same position and location as prior.

New Employees: As a temporary employee, you will not be eligible for leave entitlements or benefits. The provisions of the Collective Agreement apply, with some exceptions listed in Article 2.06.

Function and Purpose of Position

A Library Technician I maintains the daily operations of the library, working with staff and students to support diverse learning needs in a welcoming environment. You will work collaboratively and independently to create a learning commons for all.

Library Technician I’s may:

  • Work under the direction of the Principal or designate
  • Work independently and as part of a team
  • Enjoy working with students and staff

Learning Commons Resources and Instructional Support

  • Manage literature, including circulation, ordering, and collection maintenance
  • Understand Alberta Education policies and guidelines
  • Create an exciting and positive environment for students
  • Maintain a budget for the Learning Commons
  • Support an inclusive and forward-thinking literacy environment
  • Network with others beyond the school
  • Familiarity with Maker Space and innovative library practices
  • Support instruction, research, literacy, and learning in digital and print environments
  • Classify and catalog new materials appropriately

Behavior

  • Maintain a safe and secure environment using de-escalation and crisis intervention techniques

Student Assistance and Personal Care

  • Support, assist, and supervise students

Communication and Reporting

  • Build relationships with students and staff
  • Promote library services through campaigns and events

Supervise Students

  • Assist students as needed

Student Personal Development

  • Provide guidance to develop student skills and knowledge
  • Tutor, mentor, and coach students

Other Duties

  • Perform other assigned duties

Education and Experience

  • Education: High School Diploma; Information and Library Technology Diploma or equivalent is an asset
  • Experience: 3-5 years related experience; experience with Destiny, Discovery Education, Google Apps, and hardware is an asset. Equivalencies will be considered.

Physical Demands

  • Lifting up to 50 lbs; heavier items may be required
  • Work in a fast-paced, noisy environment with interruptions
  • Stand, bend, sit, reach as needed
  • Assist students, staff, and the public

Working Conditions

  • Primarily indoors; outdoor supervision or field trips as needed
  • Same holiday schedule as teachers, with a ten-month contract; paid during the school year only
  • Specific hours depend on the position
  • Use of personal vehicle may be required
