Under the supervision of the chief librarian of user services, the technician greets users at the service desk; acts as the first point of contact with clients; serves as a resource person for our selection list.

Providing customer service within library activities includes:

  • Participating in circulation services, lending, and returning books;
  • Welcoming users, proactively assisting with customer service, guiding research, helping find documents;
  • Providing directional reference service: guiding students, faculty, and other users in utilizing library services, including orientation sessions at the start of fall and winter sessions;
  • Providing first-line reference service using the library catalog, research guides, and electronic tools; referring to a librarian when needed;
  • Ensuring the proper functioning of group study rooms; assisting students with reservations; ensuring policies are followed;
  • Basic IT support: maintaining public computers, assisting users, reporting issues to the IT team, following up on requests, and supporting the PaperCut printing system.

B. Digitization and Selection List

  • Preparing the daily selection list for the integrated library system;
  • Gathering and preparing documents for transport;
  • Digitizing articles or documents;
  • Sending digitized documents;
  • Resolving issues within the integrated library system or digitization process.

Organizing and returning library documents to their proper shelves. This may include weededing or transferring documents between collections.

  • Collecting documents from various floors daily, including group study rooms and service counters;
  • Sorting monographs, periodicals, newspapers, reference works, and microforms;
  • Storing documents based on location, classification codes, and specific arrangements;
  • Ensuring documents are not stored too tightly on shelves; moving collections as needed;
  • Removing and repairing damaged documents;
  • Checking the order on shelves and returning misplaced documents to their correct places;
  • Searching for missing books or reported returns.

D. New Arrivals and Display Cases

  • Rotating new items in designated sections;
  • Preparing display cases outside the library;
  • Participating in creating thematic displays;
  • Performing any other related tasks requested by the supervisor.
  • Taking responsibility for professional development and informing the supervisor of training needs;
  • Participating in training sessions, colloquiums, and conferences related to the role.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Diploma in documentation techniques or equivalent;
  • Knowledge of MARC and RDA formats;
  • Bilingual in English and French (spoken and written);
  • Knowledge of electronic tools such as research guides and databases;
  • Knowledge of reference interviews;
  • Proficiency in MS Word and Excel;
  • Knowledge of lending software;
  • Ability to troubleshoot within their area of expertise;
  • Dynamic, interested, and motivated;
  • Flexible and adaptable to change;
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills;
  • Understanding and adherence to professional standards and principles of ethics and intellectual freedom;
  • Interpersonal skills and customer service orientation;
